The original name of Poland was Lechia. It comes from the father of our nation, Lech. Lech was one of the three sons of Pan, a Pannonian prince. Lech (the oldest) was the brother of Rus (the father of Russian people) and Cech (the youngest and father of the Czechs and Slovakian people). They respectively decided to settle West, North and East. In the the Wielkopolska Chronicle (The Chronicle of Greater Poland), it states that the three brothers promised to meet again one day. This still has yet to happen...
The painting below was painted by Walery Eljasz-Radzikowski (1841–1905), one of the greatest Polish painters. It illustrates the three Slavic brothers and the Polish eagle.
