Charles becareful what you say when you are using the word "Mafia" and Italians or they will be fitting you with cement shoes and you will be swimming with the fishes. <*(><)< Hmmmm, good point Chris Well, for every problem, there is an opportunity. I know this is true, for I watch the cinema whilst a child. The mobster mafia before they machine gun down their opponent. They all gather in their mafia owned spaghetti restaurants, and eat spaghetti. Well, what we do is this: We bribe {for all Italian mafia people take bribe money} the waiter, and powder up the bibs and napkins with massive dose of Itch powder. So as they {mafia} gather round their table place, put on their bib in preparation of eating massive quantities of spaghetti, they all scratch them selves to death. {As a cover, we then bribe one of the mafia {Italian} owned news print agency, to print up a lead story of terrible case of mass suicide occurs in leading spaghetti restaurant, cause as yet to be determined, although some speculation has led to the island of Sicily.} What are your thoughts? Or should we simply replant story with fake news print publication of: {possible link obtained of Irish police attempt at cover up of botched investigation prob.}? Charles

Leslie, Here`s a Tamil version. I suppose it is better than Chinese or Persian because Ceylon was once an English colony, wasn`t it? www.abooda.com/Feature/Investment151102.aspWhy You Must Seriously Consider Investing in Sri Lanka

Pawi
I've just got on to the PC (1000hBST) and seen the postings to which you referred me. I may be being too pedantic but I do not think these negate my grammatical argument. My reason for rejection - these are 'ads' and the places where the worst grammar occurs is in ads, newspaper headlines (often even worse) and 'verbatim' reports of politicians' s speeches. The principal occasions when it is correct to precede a word with the adverb is when the 'adverb' qualifies an adjective, for example "seriously loud" or, at times another adverb.. The only construction in which you do not use an adverb is in conjunction with a noun, for example "seriously loudness"!
However, Pawi, English has many rules - many of them inconsistent and frequently broken. To give you an idea of the adverb use, here is a set of sentences which will demonstrate these variations. "Originally the book must have been bought in a shop The book originally must have been bought in a shop The book must have originally been bought in a shop The book must originally have been bought in a shop The book must have been originally bought in a shop The book must have been bought originally in a shop The book must have been bought in a shop, originally." !!!!!!
I still consider that the most effective construction is to place the adverb after the verb.
In the examples you quote, putting 'seriously' in front of the verb does not give the same meaning and strength as it would do if it followed the verb.
You will of course remember that English is a grammatical minefield.

Pawi I've just got on to the PC (1000hBST) and seen the postings to which you referred me. I may be being too pedantic but I do not think these negate my grammatical argument. Everybody has a grammatical argument from time to time. In this case my argument is the native speaker`s usage of the adverb in a given position. I don`t care where it appears, what matters is the native speaker usage. Of course it`s not the main occasion. How about a sentence which doesn`t come from a dirty ad or politician`s speech?: The lawyer thoroughly cross- examined the witness and then called the defendant..... There are multiple cases when you use an adverb in such a position because using it after the verb would create certain disharmony. Don`t you feel that saying "We must talk seriously to her" just like you suggest I should have written is also creating such disharmony? For me it is more important to put "to her" right after "talk" that`s why I need to position my adverb before the verb. I have found the native examples of such a usage and that`s enough to know that even if I wasn` t fully right, I wasn`t wrong either hahahahahahaha Exactly that`s what I wrote in my first post answering you. After so many years I stopped being so scrupulously pedantic because I realised the inconsistencies. This adverb case is one of them and to be honest, I would never correct my student using it in this way in speech or writing. But it always depends on the contents and structure of the sentence!! Leslie, don`t be so Englishly conservative!!! You mean it sounds stronger or weaker??? To me it sounds stronger in the sense that I retain "to her" just after "talk". That`s what counts!! hahahahah! So, what`s the point in discusing adverbs??? hahahahahahaha

Pawi Only one FINAL comment! The quote you made is perfectly correct, which you will see if you read my posting (which is in perfect English!!!) - adverbs can precede adjectives without losing any of their meaning. Would you like me to come over to Krakow and give your students a real English lesson? Of course, I would expect you to be sitting in the audience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our counter-postings have just struck me as being under the correct subject heading ' Battle Flag'!! Unfortunately it will not be until sometime in 2008 (all being well) that I will be able to come to Krakow, but when I do we must have a wodka or a piwo. Leslie

Yes, high time, back to your flag! Here is a link I found on hussar flags and banners. The one on the painting and its versions were used by hussars. The cross on the flag is the Maltese cross which symbolizes noble chivalry. www.husaria.jest.pl/chorog.htmlBut to say that it is a universal Polish battle flag is a great exaggeration ....

Just as well!!!!! Goodnight - I'm off for a pint now. Les, we are all really worried by your perpetual propensity to alcohol. It seems this demon is still in control of your mind and body although you vowed to do everything to get rid of it! Jaga begged you so earnestly to give it up and what? We just can`t watch it how you are drinking yourself to death! I would like you to realise that even if you have problems, drowning them in alcohol is the worst way. You should get your problems out, instead of taking booze in. I would like to help you so much because I do care.....but I don`t know what to do. You can be so stubborn at times!!!
