I found this interesting documentary about Poland from 1950s. It is unbiased, it shows people working in the fields as well as the development of the industry and mining.

Karl, thanks for watching. When I was a girl Polish village was still like that in some parts. I miss it, but on the other hand, I don't miss the outside toilets with big holes full of s...t... and a lack of running water etc.

I miss it, but on the other hand, I don't miss the outside toilets with big holes full of s...t... and a lack of running water etc. Dear Jaga I must admit of laughing at your experience with the out side toilet. Yes, a person should never look down the hole for yes, every thing is down there... We had those also, and yes, in summer I most always looked down but to make sure there were no spiders that might sting my bottom. It never stunk for there was a board shaft that lead up through the roof for ventilation and it was always important for the toilet to be built down stream from the well. I am not sure how this was determined but it was, for our water always tasted good. As a boy, my self did almost get in to trouble with Auntie. It was my older cousin Anikka who saved me, she bounced me on the head for peeing on the toilet seat and having it freeze there.For then Auntie was taking boiling water out in the morning after we left for school and washing the seat off, I never did that again.. It was in later years that my lessons of living in a female house whole came in very handy for social survival. We did not have electricity nor running water, but we did have a hand pump in the kitchen and a large hand pump out side with the well. So you now see, we were not prosperous in Esjberg, but we had plenty to eat and with out want. Karl |

Hello Karl. You were a naughty boy. For boys it is so much easier to use the toilet, but also to make a mess, compared to the girls. As far as I remember, it was easier to connect electricity to every farm that build canals with running water and do good sanitation. There was a famous Polish minister and military man, Felicjan Slawoj, who made an action of building outdoor toilets instead of people going behind the stable and doing their needs anyway they needed. here is more about him and his products called after him: Slawojka pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C5%82awojka |
