Kai, Pieter,
Eastern Europe started introducing preventive measures early on, Czechia closed its boarders and this is probably preventing the spread. They also did not have that much traffic from China going back. This is one of these ridiculous times when people from the rich West are less safe than from the poor East.
Kai, yes, whenether I go from Europe we fly via Greenland, on the other side... in Alaska there are also a lot of traffic, you need to be vigilant

www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/03/dutch-show-worrying-disregard-for-corona-hygiene-rules-survey/Jaga,
Excuse me for these words, but there are incredible stupid compatriots of mine who are a great risk of spreading the virus. People who moved or gather in groups, smoke together and exchange cigarettes, people who do not keep a distance of 1,5 meters, people who infect others by going ill outside while they shouldn't do so and etc. You have masses of single-celled organism brain people, hippos, pigs and donkeye's, incredible stupid people. And not only in the Netherlands, because you have them amongst other people too. I have seen incredible stupid, drunk, anti-social Polish low lifes in the Netherlands as well. And you have them in the USA, Germany, France, the UK and even in the Scandinavian countries. The ecogenctric, narcist, blunt, stupid incredibly dum people. These are a problem and a huge safety risk right now. I am sorry to say, but I see such kind of compatriots in Arnhem. This Spanish doctor made a video about it:This Spanish doctor says to Spanish people don't go to the hospital if you do not have the Corona virus. He is irritated about the irrational, egocentric and stupid behaviour of compatriotsPeople, we are in thjis together and therefor have to act wise, responsible, disciplined, social and keep distance to other people, was our hands, clean our houses, desinfect objects we have had contact with. Use alcohol, cleaning products and soap. We will have to get used to live alone (my case) or with our families at home. We will have to get used to live for a long time in this emergency and crisis situation. Folks stay healthy and fit (walk and do physical excercises at home), I am able to go outside, because we haven't got a lock down in the Netherlands yet.
I am careful, keep my distance and do what I have to do. Yesterday I made this video of Arnhem South. I drove with the Renault from the RTV-Arnhem office to Arnhem South and made this. Cheers, Pieter

Folks,
I was angry and blunt in the previous post. But I think we have to connect, to talk with each other, to exchange ideas, to focus on survival and mental health next to our physical health. Somberness and depression is the next danger for people who ate stuck inside with families or alone. Being alone is not a punishment for me, because I have a lot of books, magazines (some of them great American magazines - New England -) , my photobook collection and a large collection of DVD's and hundreds of movies on my hard disk. I have a collection of old news papers I can re-read and I can look at old recordings of the muncipality building. Re-collecting, reliving local political life, a large part of my last 14 years. I have contact with my parents in Zeeland, with my sister in South Africa, with a Polish friend of the family in Warsaw (we exchange messages, photo's and video') and my friends in Arnhem, Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague.
I hope that you are ok over there in Idaho, Alaska, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Mexico, Kraków, Warszawa, Poznań, Wrocław, Chicago, Milwaukee, Cape Town, Vlissingen and other places, people I lknow and have contact with live. Stay healthy, optimistic and positive, Enjoy lovely days and the company of your loved ones. Honour your doctors and nurses and respect them, they have tough days today. Have a good sunday folks, it is a sunny day over here in Arnhem.
Cheers, Pieter

Karl
Being alone for a week and the alienating effect of this Corana virus make me more irritable than usual. The cattle like anxiety and hysteria of some compatriots and the irresponsible behaviour of some of them (unfortunately many) is unforgivable today and should be corrected. Guys like Robert Jensen with his video channel keep adding fuel to the irresponsible idiocy of some and the dangerous moves of some groups and crowds. Like Saturday when masses moved to the beach in Zandvoort near Haarlem/Amsterdam. Sunday therefor the authorities closed the beaches.
Like you say as rational people we need to take responsibility in to the reality of the present and consider the past. That fact that we had been blessed with no war since year 1945 is fantastic. But several generations of people which have been born in to this world we call our own, don't know danger, threats, losses and bloody war. You have quite a few spoiled and pantywaist kids. Their mindset and behaviour is that everything is possible and that there are no boundaries and that there is no suffering. Until they fall flat on their face, they don't know what hardship and suffering is. Probably they will soon find out.
But the bad thing is that not only kids and young adults behave like idiots, but especially also older people and middle aged people. You have crazy people in every age.
Indeed we have laws and police protection with a technology at their hands that is absolutely outstanding. But that police protection and modern technology won't save us today. What will save us today is responsible behaviour, social restraint, hygiene and acting according the instructions of the medical specialists and authorities who cooperate to contain this health crisis. Like you stated. Mothers wise advice of the past. We as media have and important task to balance between WARNINGS, PUBLIC HEALH INFORMATION and also party RELAXING ENTERTAINMENT to enable people to kill the time when they are stuck at home without work. Over reporting is a bad thing Karl, therefor I have made very few items last week and thought twice before publishing any item. I have to think about every subject and know my responsibility as a local TV reporter (Camerajournalist [Camjo]) and cameraman and editor.
The Western free press conducts their work in a responsible manner in my point of view. I follow my regional, national and international colleagues and see that they are doing a good job, reporting on the different sides to this virus, creating a lot of space for specialists like virologist and doctors next to politicians, police officers and government press conferences. The absence of public information of proper handling of post purchased foods, proper cleaning of hands and so on is a bad thing. For the less clever people amongst us both the public and the corporate (commercial) media should put a lot of emphasis on hygiene and other ways to avoid catching and spreading the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
The prime ministers, chancellors, ministers of internal affairs, health ministers and their medical specialists (advisors and partners in the state press conferences) should be pro-active, make emergency strategies and plans to fight the spread of this virus. The administrations should also fight fake news, fear, hysteria and exaggerated news. They should lead the people and contain the virus with their joint efforts, in coordination with the security forces of the police and the army (you see army trucks in Italy carrying the dead bodies of deceased Corona virus victims for instance). In cases of emergency the army can assist the police, the medical services and the fire brigades.
Like you Karl I hold a great deal of confidence in people, many Dutch people act responsible, avoid the spread of the disease, keep their distance and are hygienic. I admire them and other Europeans, Americans, Chinese people in China and people in other parts of the world of how they coop with this crisis which has huge financial, economical and social consequences for many people. Think about isolated elder people, think about vulnerable pyschiatric patients that are alone at home, think about abused little children that are the victim of incest or domestic physical or mental abuse (they don't have the escape of school, their sport club or other places they can escape too. A liberal councilwoman and mayor Ahmed Marcouch of Arnhem adressed this issue as well.
Indeed we are the products of the low lands of the North Sea, the strong winds, the hard rain and the flat lands.
Cheers, Pieter

Twists in the Propaganda Machine and 1984
By Paul Krugman
Opinion Columnist
It’s hard to feel any sympathy for Trish Regan, the Fox News host who was fired after a rant in which she called the coronavirus “yet another attempt to impeach the president.” We may never know how many Fox viewers became gravely ill or died because they ignored social distancing in response to people like Regan, who told them that the pandemic was a politically motivated hoax. But the number was surely significant.
The twist in the Regan story, however, is that what she said wasn’t significantly different from what her whole network had been saying for weeks. Her career-killing mistake wasn’t saying something false and evil, it was her timing. She apparently missed the abrupt turn in the party line by a few hours.
For Regan’s rant came just after Fox and right-wing media in general suddenly changed their line from “the pandemic is a liberal hoax” to “everyone must unify behind our great leader in his heroic struggle against the Chinese virus.” And for some reason Regan didn’t get the memo.
Actually, Regan wasn’t the only person who didn’t get the memo. A number of people on the religious right are still sticking with the virus-as-hoax story, notably Jerry Falwell Jr., who defied public health experts by reopening Liberty University — and promptly created his own personal virus hot spot. But most leading figures on the right have swerved on command.

Needless to say, the mounting coronavirus death toll hasn’t produced any apologies from pundits who previously claimed that the virus was a hoax, let alone admissions that the terrible, horrible, no-good mainstream media were actually giving accurate information. Perhaps more surprisingly, as far as I know there haven’t been any howls of protest from Fox viewers, or Rush Limbaugh listeners, who are now being told something completely different from what they were hearing three weeks ago. Their trust in Fox, their disdain for The New York Times and The Washington Post, and, above all, their faith in Donald Trump are apparently unshaken.
The parallels with George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four” are obvious. When Oceania suddenly shifts alliances, and its former ally Eastasia becomes an enemy, everyone knows what to believe: not only was the nation at war with Eastasia, it had always been at war with Eastasia. In Orwell’s vision, however, this mind-set was produced by a totalitarian state whose vigilant Thought Police stamp out any hint of independent thought. America isn’t a totalitarian state — not yet, anyway — yet there are tens of millions of American apparently willing to act and think as if the Thought Police were already up and running.
Orwell wrote a great essay a few years before “Nineteen Eighty-Four” titled “Looking Back on the Spanish War.” In it he wrote of his vision of a “nightmare world in which the Leader, or some ruling clique, controls not only the future but the past. If the Leader says of such and such an event, ‘It never happened’ — well, it never happened. If he says that two and two are five — well, two and two are five. This prospect frightens me much more than bombs.”
Well, a lot of Americans evidently already live in that nightmare world. And that scares me more than Covid-19.
Quick Hits Democracy effectively died in Hungary a while back, but the ruling party is exploiting the pandemic to go full totalitarian. Yes, it could happen here.
Laurie Garrett warned for years that something like this could happen. Her thoughts on America’s response.
The Republican about-face on deficits prefigured the sudden swerve on the coronavirus.
The economy is taking a hit. Unemployment might go as high as 32 percent.

Fox Business Ditches Trish Regan After Coronavirus ‘Impeachment Scam’ Rant ‘PARTED WAYS’The Fox Business host was officially let go on Friday more than two weeks after she ranted against the “coronavirus impeachment scam.” Fox Business Network announced on Friday that it has officially “parted ways” with anchor Trish Regan following her controversial rant against what she called the “coronavirus impeachment scam” earlier this month. “We thank her for her contributions to the network over the years and wish her continued success in her future endeavors,” the network said in a statement. “We will continue our reduced live primetime schedule for the foreseeable future in an effort to allocate staff resources to continuous breaking news coverage on the Coronavirus crisis.” “I have enjoyed my time at FOX and now intend to focus on my family during these troubled times,” Regan said in her own statement. “I am grateful to my incredible team at FOX Business and for the many opportunities the network has provided me. I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my career.” VIDEO: The only video of the rant seems to be on line at 'The Beast", and that cannot be tied to directly. Fox News has a blank Trish Regan page. www.thedailybeast.com/fox-business-network-fires-trish-regan-after-coronavirus-impeachment-scam-rantRegan was previously placed on an indefinite hiatus after she delivered a surreal monologue on Monday, March 9 in which she accused Democrats and the media of perpetuating a coronavirus hoax. With the words “Coronavirus Impeachment Scam” on the screen next to her, Regan told viewers, “We’ve reached a tipping point. The chorus of hate being leveled at the president is nearing a crescendo as Democrats blame him and only him for a virus that originated halfway around the world. This is yet another attempt to impeach the president.” “Many in the liberal media using, and I mean using, coronavirus in an attempt to demonize and destroy the president,” she added. Following what amounted to a suspension, Regan tried to pass off her situation as part of larger safety measures at Fox, tweeting, “FBN has taken prudent steps to limit staffing levels and is prioritizing its coverage during market hours. I fully support this decision—we all must to do our part to keep our colleagues safe.” Since then she has mostly used her Twitter account to encourage private companies to help fight the pandemic and cheer on the stock market during its rare rallies.
