The accident happened almost at the end of the competition in Katowice. Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen has been put in a medically induced coma after crashing at the finish line on stage one of the Tour of Poland following a collision with compatriot Dylan Groenewegen. I wonder what Pieter can tell us about it. Jakobsen, who rides for the Deceuninck-Quick Step team, was jostling for position with Groenewegen in the final metres, but the pair came together with Groenewegen sending Jakobsen flying into the barriers, where he collided with a race official. The sport's governing body, the UCI, issued a statement strongly condemning what it called the "dangerous behaviour" of Groenewegen, accusing him of causing the crash and disqualifying him from the race. "The UCI, which considers the behaviour unacceptable, immediately referred the matter to the Disciplinary Commission to request the imposition of sanctions commensurate with the seriousness of the facts," the UCI said. here is the video: www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-06/dutch-cyclist-jacobsen-induced-coma-high-speed-crash-tour-poland/12529008

As far as I know, similar accident happened last year and one sportsman died. As you can see the end is on the street which makes it difficult. Dutch media are criticizing the organizers and the cyclist, they are probably right that the organizers should be more careful to avoid such a crowd at the end of the race.

Jaga, It seems or looks like a sort of rivalry in top sport and that the accident has an entire ‘Dutch nature’ since both the ‘perpetrator’ and the ‘victim’ are Dutch. Anger in the Dutch and Belgian Flemish cyclist world is directed at the ‘perpetrator’, Dylan Groenewegen. Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen is said by some sources to be fighting for his life following the crash, in which fellow Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen deviated from his line and forced Jakobsen into the barriers. www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/08/dutch-cyclist-fights-for-his-life-after-horrific-crash-in-tour-de-poland/Cheers, Pieter

This was an extreme accident since a few metres before the finish of the 1st stage in the 2020 Tour de Pologne Fabio Jakobsen heavily crashed at the speed of about 80 km/h (49mi 1249.064yd per hour) after Dylan Groenewegen deviated from his line and forced Jakobsen into the barriers. The race doctor initially reported that Jakobsen had suffered several major injuries, including serious brain trauma and damage to the upper respiratory tract, a broken palate, and heavy blood loss, and remained in life-threatening condition.

To be honest I think this is the bloody, vicious and nasty side effect of top sports in which fierce rivalry, a bull like macho behavior, machiavellism, corporate interests, swollen ego’s, survival of the fittest, ego’s, extreme pressure, tension and financial situation interests play such a large role.
It is like the song of Queen;
“ I've paid my dues Time after time I've done my sentence But committed no crime And bad mistakes I've made a few I've had my share of sand kicked in my face But I've come through
We are the champions, my friends And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end We are the champions We are the champions No time for losers 'Cause we are the champions of the world
I've taken my bows And my curtain calls You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it I thank you all
But it's been no bed of roses No pleasure cruise I consider it a challenge before the whole human race And I ain't gonna lose
We are the champions, my friends And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end We are the champions We are the champions No time for losers ‘Cause we are the champions of the world
We are the champions, my friends And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end We are the champions We are the champions No time for losers 'Cause we are the champions”

Folks, Besides the doping scandals in the cyclist sport world. simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doping_in_sportDon’t get me wrong. I love the cycling sport, ‘Tour de France’ 🇫🇷, ‘The Tour of Flanders’ (Dutch: Ronde van Vlaanderen), ‘Tour of Italy’ (Giro d'Italia), and The Tour de Pologne (Wyścig Dookoła Polski, Tour of Poland) and The Cape Town Cycle Tour, an annual cycle race hosted in Cape Town, South Africa, usually 109 km (68 mi) long. I only have my doubts about the commercial circus around the sport and the doping which is spoiling the sport. Cheers, Pieter

Pieter,
I am so glad you replied. It is weird to have a conflict among compatriots, but I would also blame unsafe conditions at the end. It should be at the stadium. Biking is a much better sport than boxing, but professional biking can be almost as dangerous as car racing it looks.
