Election watch: news from the final weekend of campaigningMarch 13, 2021 The Netherlands goes to the polls to elect 150 MPs for the lower house of parliament in the coming week. Here’s a round up of news from the final weekend of campaigning. D66 on the upWith just a day before voting starts, D66 is increasing its lead thanks to a strong performance by party leader and current trade minister Sigrid Kaag, according to the latest poll by opinion pollster Maurice de Hond. De Hond suggests D66 could win 17 seats in the 150-seat parliament and says support for the party would be higher if it was not for pan-European newcomer Volt, which is he suggests could win three. The poll is based on an online survey of almost 4,500 people. De Hond’s poll also sees the Forum voor Democratie spin-off JA21 and Sylvana Simon’s BIJ1 also winning seats in parliament for the first time. D66 election adLHBTI agreement =1 Eight parties, including three of the current coalition, have signed a ‘rainbow agreement’ together with lhbti campaign group COC Nederland. The agreement commits signatories to take steps to end violence against people on the basis of sex or sexual preference, and to improve the acceptance of lhbti youngsters in schools. Similar agreements were signed ahead of the 2012 and 2017 general elections, but this is the first time the CDA has taken such a step. The other religious parties in parliament and the far right parties did not sign. National recovery plan Prime minister Mark Rutte has suggested cutting the post-election coalition negotiations in two. Firstly, the most likely coalition of parties should draw up a ‘national recovery plan’ and then MPs from all parties will be asked to support it, in order to widen backing for the measures, Rutte told the AD in an interview. ‘We need to make a flying start,’ he said. ‘We can’t spend months behind closed doors working out how the water boards will operate in 2023. Such a formation will take an idiotic length of time, and that is time we don’t have,’ he said. Coronavirus influence Just one in five voters say their choice of who to vote for in the election has been influenced by coronavirus, Trouw reported on Saturday, based on an analysis of 15,000 people’s voting plans. The Kieskompas research shows 12% of people have had doubts about their choice of party and 8% say they will vote for a different party than then did in 2017 because of coronavirus. The under-35s are more likely to let coronavirus policies influence their choice of party.

The Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (English: Dutch Broadcast Foundation) is one of the broadcasting organisations making up the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system. It has a special statutory obligation to make news and sports programmes for the three Dutch public television channels and the Dutch public radio services.Sylvana Simons of the leftwing party BIJ1, Annabel Nanninga of the Rightwing Populist and Conservative JA21 en Laurens Dassen of the progressive Federalist Volt party at NOS on the Dutch public tv chanal NPO 3.After the elections we will probably have to deal with a record number of parties in the House of Representatives. Based on the figures from the Polling Guide, Volt and JA21 have a chance of winning multiple seats. Various other new parties, such as Bij1, BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) and Code Oranje, have no chance either.
How do you transform from zero to hero as a new party? And why do parties like Volt and JA21 succeed, where most newcomers get stuck in good intentions?Richard de Mos, Party leader of Code Oranje on campaign in the country'Sticking out above ground level'"It all starts with generating some awareness, so that as a party you stand out above ground level", says political scientist André Krouwel, maker of the online voting aid Kieskompas. Both the European, progressive party Volt and the right-wing JA21 had an advantage over most competitors in that area from the outset.
André Krouwel (Vianen, November 3, 1964) is a Dutch political scientist, associate professor at the departments of Political Science / Public Administration and Communication Sciences of the VU University in Amsterdam. Krouwel is founder and co-owner of Kieskompas. He is also a columnist at VNG (the Association of Dutch Municipalities).
As a split-off from Forum for Democracy, JA21 automatically received the necessary publicity and has fairly well-known leaders in the people of Joost Eerdmans and Annabel Nanninga.
Volt had some success in the last elections to the European Parliament in 2019. The party received almost 2 percent of the vote there. Not enough for a place in the European Parliament, but this may be different for the chances in the House of Representatives. "We are not just predicting three seats on March 17," said campaign leader Itay Garmy.Joost Eerdmans of JA21 with his fellow party founder Annabel Nanninga, the name JA in JA21 is taken from their names Joost for J and Annabel for A, they combine Rotterdam (Joost Eerdmans) and Amsterdam (Annabel Nanninga). Leefbaar Rotterdam is the former political partuy of Eerdmans. He was an alderman in Rotterdam for Leefbaar Rotterdam. He started in Pim Fortuyn's populist party LPF and he considers himself still to be a Fortuynist. He is ideology is for a large party Fortuynist, but he also took elements of the Forum for Democracy party of Thierry Baudet, which he left together with Annabel Nanninga.Clear messageThanks to membership dues and donations, Volt was able to hire three full-time employees after the previous election. This also resulted in a starting budget of around 80,000 euros for the campaign for the House of Representatives elections. Money that, according to Garmy, was mainly spent on flyers, posters and advertisements on social media.
"Volt was already quite visible in the public space long before the elections", Krouwel has noticed. "You have to be able to finance that, not every party can do that."
But more is needed: "It is also about being able to convey a certain feeling to the voter, preferably through a message that is unique to your party." JA21 does this by profiling itself as the reasonable alternative to the right, Volt focuses strongly on progressive young people with strong internationalist views, says Krouwel.Get through to the pollsThe next essential step for a party with ambition is to get through to the opinion polls. This has important advantages for newcomers, advantages that also reinforce each other. Anyone who, according to the polls, can seriously hope for a seat, for example, gains credibility with the voter. After all, they need less fear that their vote will be 'lost' to a party that is unlikely to reach the electoral threshold.
In addition, such success ensures that voting aids such as Kieskompas, which serve millions of voters during election time, include you in it. And that attracts interest from the media, which in turn increases awareness. “Once you are written about in terms of a winner, that flywheel effect can arise that every party is looking for,” says Krouwel. "All kinds of studies show that people tend to want to be part of the winner."
The ultimate example of this comes from 2012, when PvdA party leader Diederik Samsom gained one or two extra seats per day in the polls in the final phase, mainly at the expense of Emile Roemer's SP.Sylvana SimonsSylvana Simons, party leader of BIJ1But how does a brand new party get into those polls? This again requires some degree of awareness. Polls ask voters to which parties they are more open. If they mention the name of such a candidate or party on the list, it will be included by the polls in the list of parties from which you can choose. With enough support, things can go fast, Volt and JA21 show.
In addition, Volt has invested in contacts with journalists, writers and scientists over the past year. "Forerunners who then say that they will vote for such a new party," says Krouwel. De Correspondent editor-in-chief Rob Wijnberg is one of them.
Many new parties may therefore have a chance of a place in the Chamber. In the latest I&O Research poll, Bij1 gets a seat from Sylvana Simons, just like in Maurice de Hond's poll. The latter is the only gauge to date that Richard de Mos's Code Oranje has a chance of winning a seat. There is no conflictAll of these debutants seem to be taking advantage of the lack of tension in this year's campaign. In the past, there was often a battle for first place, which drew doubting voters to the largest parties and left the small parties behind. There is no such conflict this year. Based on the Polling Guide, there is a good chance that Prime Minister Rutte's VVD will win the elections, just like four years ago.
In such a scenario, voters have little or no reason to vote strategically and are more likely to follow their first preference. "And then of course I expect a lot of people to come to us," laughs Itay Garmy van Volt.

JA21 (acronym for Juiste Antwoord 2021 - Just Answer 2021-, lit. ' Right Answer 2021') is a serious competitor for Geert Wilders PVV, Thierry Baudet's Forum voor Democracy and Richard de Mos Code Orange. JA21 is a political party in the Netherlands, which is currently active in the Senate as the Nanninga Group (Dutch: Fractie-Nanninga, formerly known as Fractie-Van Pareren). It was founded in December 2020 by Joost Eerdmans and Annabel Nanninga after leaving Forum for Democracy on 26 November 2020. The party will participate in the next general election, scheduled for 15, 16 and 17 March 2021. Joost Eerdmans from Rotterdam and Annabel Nanninga from Amsterdam founded JA21 togetherThey are very strong on the subject immigration, EU-Skepsis and JA21 are National Conservative and Rightwing Populist in their ideology. Thus JA21 is a serious competitor for PVV and Forum for Democracy in the National Populist Rigtwing corner of the Dutch spectrum in the National conservative, National liberal and Nationalist field. JA21 wants to be a coalition partner of the conservative liberal VVD and the Christian Democratic CDA and turn the present day coalition government of VVD-CDA-D66-ChristenUnie more to the right. Due to D66 and ChristenUNie the present government coalition is a mix of centre right and centre left policies, but has turned more to the centre left. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JA21ja21.nl/de.wikipedia.org/wiki/JA21The mood in society is more ' leftist' due to the following Global (Mortgate) crisis of 2007-2008 -it's afternath- and the present day COVID-19 Corona crisis with it's financial-economical and social-cultural and healthcare consequences. High class incomes dropped to Middle class level, middle class incomes dropped to working class level, and skilled working class level incomes dropped to underclass unskilledunemployed social benefit level. In all classes people lost jobs, of course the Horeca, Retail (Shop keepers, middle big businesses, family firms, small and middle big entrepreneurs), people are forced to sell their houses and cars, some people from the middle class or working class are dependent on Food bank's, social benefits, the charity of others, and housing prises keep rising, together with rent costs of apartments and rooms. Developments on the leftIn the youth wing of the Socialist Party RED (ROOD) prominent members were also member of the Communist Platform and that caused contriversy within the party and tensions with the party leadership which don't want to much attention on the Maoist and Marxist-Leninist roots of the Socialist Party (SP) which was a militant classical workers party during the seventies and eighties with especially a lot of Industrial working class and harbour workers support in the North Brababt industrial town of Oss and Rotterdam.
The Communist Platform was founded in 2014. Since its foundation it has mainly focussed on organising educational events and publishing articles and voting advices for members of the Socialist Party. In June 2020, the Communist Platform took the initiative for the Marxist Forum, according to its website an "authentic, democratic marxist wing" in the Socialist Party. The Marxist Forum organises meetings for SP-members where they discuss the SP's course and where motions are formulated to carry at party congresses. In October 2020 five SP members were expelled from the party for alleged membership of the Communist Platform and/or the Marxist Forum, which both are marked as independent political parties by the SP's leadership. Amongst the expelled members there was at least one branch chairperson and a few board members of various branches. In November, a sixth member was expelled on the same grounds as the previous five SP members. In response to the expulsions, SP against the Witch-hunt was launched in November 2020. SP against the Witch-hunt is a campaign that calls for the annulment of the expulsions, for immediate cessation of marking the Communist Platform and the Marxist Forum as independent political parties and in favour of the right to form factions in the SP. Members of the Communist PlatformOn November 16 the expulsions of the alleged CP members became national news due to an episode of the popular news show Nieuwsuur. In this episode, SP general secretary Arnout Hoekstra claimed that the six expelled members planned to start an armed civil war. The expelled SP members claim that their expulsions are part of a witch-hunt that aims to silence dissident members, specifically in the context of a controversial strive of the SP leadership to enter in a coalition. Political commentator Nynke de Zoeten places the expulsions in the context of a party leadership that has expressed interest in entering a government coalition with the VVD, something which parts of the SP membership do not agree with.
On November 17 the SP party leader Lilian Marijnissen expressed her support for the expulsions. She endorses the explanation that the six expelled members strive for a violent civil war. The Communist Platform denies these allegations. The chairperson of ROOD, the youth wing of the SP defended the expelled members in the Volkskrant. He denies that the expulsions have anything to do with policies of the Communist Platform, and instead he claims the expulsions are the consequence of internal political strife.SP party leader Lilian Marijnissen ( de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilian_Marijnissen ) On November 21 the board of ROOD published an article in which they spoke out against the statements of Arnout Hoekstra. They claimed that his remarks about an upcoming coup in ROOD was unfounded, especially given the fact that the situation involved active members being elected in a democratic process. The claims of preparing for a civil war we're also labeled as "unfounded" by the board.
On November 22 Olaf Kemerink, one of the expelled members was elected as chairman to ROOD with 75% of the votes. The party leadership of the Socialist Party responded to Nieuwsuur that they would get into contact with the board of ROOD, and a decision would soon follow.

On the left and on the right Populists take their chances and become popular. In uncertain parties old radical and extremist ideologies come to the surface and new ideologies, subgroups, groups, political movements, fractions and political parties emerge.Militant Socialist Party messageCheers, Pieter

In general the right dominates the elections and the left forms a large minority. The weakness of the left and centre left is always it's division. Despite efforts of GreenLeft, the Dutch Green party to unite the leftwing parties that attempt largely failed. In their effort GreenLeft even had an election poster with the names of the 4 leftwing and centre left party leaders. Starting with the Socialist Party leader Lilian Marijnissen, second Lilianne Ploumen, the Labour Party leader, third Sigrid Kaag of the Centrist to centre left D66 party and last their own Party leader Jesse Klaver of GreenLeft.

Opinion polling for the 2021 Dutch general electionIn the run-up to the 2021 Dutch general election, various organisations are carrying out opinion polling to gauge voting intentions in the Netherlands. Results of such polls are displayed in this list.
The date range for these opinion polls are from the previous general election, held on 15 March 2017, to the present day. The next election is scheduled for 17 March 2021. Snap elections occur fairly frequently in the Netherlands, having most recently occurred in 2012.
No sample sizes or date ranges are provided by Maurice de Hond's Peil.nl; the panel includes approximately 3,000 respondents per week. Data on sample sizes and dates for the first two Kantar Public polls was not provided. Because date ranges and sample sizes for the Ipsos Political Barometer is not archived, only the end dates are listed. The date of publication is the listed date for Peil.nl polls, while the end date is used for Ipsos, I&O Research, Kantar Public, and GfK (De Stemming/EenVandaag). Starting in January 2018, EenVandaag cooperates with Ipsos for De Peiling, and has dropped GfK as their pollster.
