It has been of several times in past of my personal concern over your safety whilst in the process of your work. For in proper coverage for public benefit you are placed in the most dangerous situations and unprotected. For your work is a valuable public service in providing news in an unbiased manner. But then, if to have police protection, this would then be an attraction for thugs and idiots.

Pieter, yes it is, also political journalists and layers are often the sources of the attacks. Probably it is much safer to be a gravedigger (peaceful job at the cemeteries) than to be a journalist

Karl and Jaga, Thank for both of your replies, and of course both of you are right in what you are saying. The job of news reporting is a job of risk nowadays. I am not a crime reporter, but crime is part of the news. Also local (city/muncipality) and regional news. Risk calculation, editorial (newsroom) risk calculation discussions, analyses and debates are part of the work in my news organisation (broadcast corporation). The Dutch king has just made a statement in Germany where he is for a State visit. He spoke about an attack on Press Freedom, the work of journalists and paid his respect to the family, colleagues and friends of Peter R. de Vries, de journalist which was gunned down. Yesterday evening next to the major of Amsterdam prime minister Rutte spoke out in similar manner as the king.

Peter R. de Vries Peter R. de Vries shortly before he was gunned down in the TV show RTL-Boulevard. He was gunned down in Amsterdam in the same street after he left the building of RTL-Boulevard. When he left the tv studio he was shot outside and heavily wounded. He is fighting for his life right now. He was shot in the head and body with 5 bullets.Peter Rudolf de Vries (born 14 November 1956) is a Dutch investigative journalist and crime reporter. His television program Peter R. de Vries, misdaadverslaggever (Crime Reporter) (1995−2012) covered high-profile cases and set a Dutch television viewing record. In 2005, he started his own political party which was disbanded soon after. On 6 July 2021, he was shot after leaving the television studio of RTL Boulevard in Amsterdam where he had appeared as a guest. Brother Posbank murder victim about attack on 'terrier' De Vries: 'My world is turned upside down'
The news about the assassination attempt on Peter R. de Vries has hit Peter Wiegmink hard. Peter is the brother of Alex Wiegmink, who was murdered in 2003. Victim in the so-called Posbank murder. ,,I am confused and still walking around in despair. My world is turned upside down.”
Wiegmink calls De Vries a 'friend for life'. “I first met him shortly after my brother's murder. Since then we have maintained close contact. Even after the conviction of the two perpetrators. There was app contact every week. Last Monday last week.”
The house painter Alex Wiegmink from Drempt was murdered in January 2003 after a run on the National park Posbank in Rheden (near Arnhem). His body was found a short time later in a burned-out car in Erp in Brabant. The murder remained unsolved for a long time until November 2016. An undercover operation resulted in a breakthrough and suspects Frank S. and Souris R. were arrested. Both were sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Wiegmink heard about the attack on Peter R de Vries during the tv program De Oranjezomer of SBS6. “The report of the attack came in around a quarter past eight. From that moment on I was completely lost. Later in the evening I still had contact with Berthie Verstappen, mother of the murdered boy Nicky Verstappen. She was also devastated.”
De Vries has been assisting the parents and sister of Nicky Verstappen for almost twenty years and has helped them and the police several times with investigations. De Vries devoted several broadcasts of his program to the Verstappen case.

Outside the hospital in Amsterdam a heavily armed special police force is guarding the hospital. Pieter, I can imagine what was the influence of Peter R. de Vries and things like that should never happen in Netherlands. Polish mass media are announcing that he was killed by mafia and one of people who was involved in killing is a criminal from Poland with known history of crime. So sad!
