Nancy and Jaga,
Since I got so many helpful websites from you and Jim, I was wondering if there is some way to have a message archived here on the board somehow listing genealogy links that people have found and used, as a reference.
It would be easier for me (and others) to keep track of the links that way, all in one place. I would volunteer to help make the list, if this is something you all would like to do.

suzanne, We already have a genealogy links page on the website, and I am not sure we need to duplicate it on the forum. The links that are there are by no means complete, so if you, Jim, GM, or anyone else wants to add one, just let me know. nancy.polishsite.us/Genlinks.htmlPS. See also Jaga's post "Genealogy articles and links" in this forum.

Whoops, you're right, I completely forgot about the genealogy links page. No need to duplicate that, then. I'll let you know if I find anything worth adding.

Suzanne, Another good site is www.ancestry.com but it costs money to subscribe. Keep an eye on it sometimes they let people access for free. But whatever you do don't publish your gedcom files to anyone. Some sites actually take those files and sell them.

Jim, Thanks, I'm aware of ancestry.com but right now, I don't want to buy any subscriptions unless I'm sure I'm going to need it. I'm not sure how helpful sites like that are if you don't need to do much genealogy research of ancestors in the US - i.e. they seem to be helpful if you want to see where relatives lived 130 years ago in Ohio, for example, but if you need pre-immigration European data, I'm not sure how much stuff they have available. I need to "go to the source," whatever that source may be.
Yes, I absolutely agree about not publishing anything. I wouldn't put personal files or info out on the Web, anyway.

Suzanne, If you join some of the Genealogy list form roots web there are members of those lists that will look things up for you. They are very helpful. I would agree if you need to research across the pond then you need the LDS films and Archives in that country.

Wow, people will look stuff up for you? That certainly very accomodating, and a time-saver!
I had the impression that the LDS does not have films for every country at this point, but maybe I'm wrong.

Suzanne,
I know that on some of the Polish lists people will look things up for you. Polish Roots and Polish Genius are very helpful. Fred Hoffman posts to both of them. He is the author of Family Surnames Origins and Meanings.

Jim, currently youcan access the WW I draft card records for free though German gen, I believe. Go to www.militaryindexes.com/worldwarone/and click on the WW I draft notices, register for free and you have access until Nov 25. Good luck - for me the web page came up with an "unclickable " link, but that was worked around. Kai
