Pieter In the first, my self am not a military strategist, very far from it, but a veteran of many years past serving in the Bundeswehr in a tank/Panzer division for my required military duty of that time. It is most very amazing of the mistakes the Russians have and are doing in their deployment of their tanks. Those machines are very well designed in most manners with some exceptions that are the storage of munitions. For it is not the fault of this Russian Tanks in use, but how they are used and the lack of air protection/troop protection and areas not suitable for tanks. Tanks are the spear head of most combat missions, but must have aircover for over head protection. With aircover, tanks need tank combat solders as a team accompanied in armoured personnale carriers. In this manner once in enemy contact, the tank troops will debark with the tanks first using long range cannon fire to neutralize enemy fortifications and defenses. The tank solders then do what solders do, once defenses have been destroyed. The Russians in this stead, are using main roadways which is a no, no, for they then are inviting enemy forces some juicy targets lined up in a column. First to hit the lead tank to stop the column, then the last tank to keep the column stationary and then pick them off each to their end. The number one issue a tank commander has first, is fuel use and where to get it, for a tank is a very thirsty machine and uses fuel as if to no end. The Russians have along with other serious mistakes, did not have refueling stations in place for their various missions using these machines. The other along a very long list of childish mistakes and misuse of Tank weapons, is the manner of application. For tanks have tracks that are very suitable over wheeled vehicles in mobility over rough terrine surfaces. With this, it is a mistake to use tanks in closed areas such as city streets, tanks by their nature of design, are best used in open areas for use of its weapons and cannon. A tank even as a single unit, can level a good size village in a manner of minutes and can do very heavy damage to a city with the long range cannon fire, but on the out skirts. The following url although Americans in an M1 tank, is comical but not comical whilst doing service duty in a tank. It is the same situations in most all tanks of each respective country. It needs be noted though, some tanks do not have a floor escape hatch whilst many do. What ever nature decides can be accomplished much better through the escape hatch if available. taskandpurpose.com/mandatory-fun/heres-like-command-m1-abrams-tank/Karl

The Syrian army is Soviet and Russian trained and supported. They use Russian tanks and armoured vehicles.
