À wolve family near Arnhem in the Middle Eastern part of the Netherlands 🇳🇱 In the large Veluwe Forest area with a lot of Deer, roe deer (Capreolus), Wild Boars 🐗, European Hares, rabbits and other spieces. A lot of food for the wolves. Dutch Farmers and sheepherders are not fond of the Wolves, because like in France massacres of sheep 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑, and killings of farm chickens and other smaller farm animals took place. Also tame rabbits and hobby chickens of civilians in civilian gardens were attacked by wolves and one couple on a bike cycling in the Veluwe Forest were attacked by wolves. Which is unnatural and an exception, because wolves often stay away from humans, because Humans in the past were the Wolves largest enemy. There were no wolves in the Netherlands for 140 years because the Dutch killed to many of them in the 19th century. The farmers and sheepherders would love to kill the wolves, but animal protection laws prohibit them from killing wolves.

Wolves and humans
Wolves and humans can coexist well. Healthy wolves that are not provoked or fed pose no threat to humans beforehand. Because wolves are shy animals, they will generally avoid humans. This does not necessarily mean that wolves immediately flee as soon as they see a human. A wolf will mainly act out of self-defense. For example, if he feels threatened or if he has to defend his territory or boy.
Wandering wolves, looking for territory, can also move through built-up areas. Wolves that live in an area where they are not hunted react cautiously to the sight of humans. Shyness of wolves

The wolf once lived in almost all of Europe. In the Netherlands too, the wolf has traditionally belonged in our nature. Through centuries of intensive persecution by humans, the animal was completely exterminated. Legal protection since 1982 brought about a gradual turnaround. Now the wolf has returned to the Netherlands on its own.
The Iron Curtain for decades blocked the Wolf from moving from Eastern & Central Europe to Western Europe. After the Iron Curtain was dismantled nothing stopped the Ukrainian, Russian, Belarussian and Polish wolves from crossing into West Germany 🇩🇪, Luxemburg 🇱🇺,Belgium 🇧🇪 and the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
From 2015, wolves appeared in the Netherlands from Germany. First as bums, but soon as stayers. In 2019, the first cubs were born in the Veluwe. A sign that the wolf finds enough rest and food in our densely populated country. At least 16 wolf cubs were born this year in four different packs (one pair with cubs). By now we know for sure, the wolf is back in the Netherlands.

The wolf is a species that is not bound by national borders. The wolves in the Netherlands are part of the Central European wolf population to the east and the Alpine wolf population to the south. Cooperation between the Benelux and Germany has led to the creation of a cross-border map of wolf territories. For example, governments are working together to map out wolf populations. This map can be expanded in the future with data from other countries.

Large grazers and wild boars have to watch their backs again. They have to get used to that, they have had no natural enemies for a long time. It may sound crazy, but they are very important. The presence of wolves causes ungulates to temporarily avoid places. This reduces the grazing pressure, creating a more varied and natural landscape. Something that we in the Netherlands yearn for, because nature and biodiversity are far from recovered.

The evolution of the wolf occurred over a geologic time scale of at least 300 thousand years. The grey wolf Canis lupus is a highly adaptable species that is able to exist in a range of environments and which possesses a wide distribution across the Holarctic. Studies of modern grey wolves have identified distinct sub-populations that live in close proximity to each other. This variation in sub-populations is closely linked to differences in habitat – precipitation, temperature, vegetation, and prey specialization – which affect cranio-dental plasticity.
The archaeological and paleontological records show grey wolf continuous presence for at least the last 300,000 years.This continuous presence contrasts with genomic analyses, which suggest that all modern wolves and dogs descend from a common ancestral wolf population that existed as recently as 20,000 years ago.These analyses indicate a population bottleneck, followed by a rapid radiation from an ancestral population at a time during, or just after, the Last Glacial Maximum. This implies that the original wolf populations were out-competed by a new type of wolf which replaced them. However, the geographic origin of this radiation is not known.

The dog (Canis familiarisor Canis lupus familiaris) is a domesticated descendant of the wolf. Also called the domestic dog, it is derived from the extinct Pleistocene wolf, and the modern wolf is the dog's nearest living relative. The dog was the first species to be domesticated, by hunter-gatherers over 15,000 years ago, before the development of agriculture. Due to their long association with humans, dogs have expanded to a large number of domestic individuals and gained the ability to thrive on a starch-rich diet that would be inadequate for other canids.

A very surprising turn of events of the returning of wolves to the Netherlands, and a very courageous one I must say. It is with good hope and trust that people will leave these wolves be and let nature provide its own manner of conservation in the balance known best by nature.
