I saw info about this sale going through in Germany in Polish news and I thought that this should never happen. Good that the sale was halted according to Washington Post. Quite nice piece of work by Kandinsky that disappeared during the temporary exhibition and it was well documented. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/12/03/kandinsky-grisebach-poland-germany-stolen/A German auction house halted its sale of an untitled 1928 painting by the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky on Friday after Polish authorities vowed legal action, stating that the painting had been stolen from a Warsaw museum almost four decades ago. Poland’s culture ministry said it would try to recover the Kandinsky from the Grisebach auction house because the work had been taken from the National Museum in Warsaw in 1984. Culture Minister Piotr Glinski accused Grisebach of trying to sell the artwork despite knowing that it had been previously stolen. The abstract watercolor, in shades of pink, orange and yellow, is listed on the auction house’s website as having been sold for 387,500 euros, or about $408,000.

As with many other works of art stolen during the war, should be and needs be returned to their rightful owners. This Kandinsky piece is little different and should be returned to its rightful owners as being The Warsaw museum. The present and\or holder of this property should have or did have knowledge of this property as stolen should be held on charges of knowingly possession of stolen property and be prosecuted as a crime.

Karl, I agree. Kandinsky was a creator of abstract art and this piece is really beautiful, but of course the history and the law are the most important in this aspect
