The head of France’s largest farming organization said Monday farmers would block all major highways out of Paris as protests against price pressures, taxes and the European Union’s (EU) nature restoration law intensify.
“In any case, we’re escalating. We’re here today, we’re leaving the highway for the first time in almost eight days, we’re taking the RN 31 and this evening, we’ve decided to come back here,” said Regis Desrumaux, the head of the FDSEA farmers union for the OISE region.
France has said it will push to ease EU environmental regulations on fallow farmland this week but farmers say they remain unhappy with the government’s response. On Friday, the French government also dropped plans to gradually reduce state subsidies on agricultural diesel.
Meanwhile, the protests spread to southern Belgium as farmers blocked one of Europe’s busiest highways and parked tractors a stone throw from the EU Parliament. Protesters said it was a taste of the protests planned for the EU Leaders’ Summit on Thursday.

Since last night, highways on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium have been blocked. Farmers stand there with their tractors and light fires. Dutch farmners joined Belgian farmers in their protest. The vast majority were belgian farmers, but 40 Dutch farmers supported their Flemish Belgian colleagues over the border.

Brussels saw a chaotic farmer's protest on Thursday as demonstrators clashed with police, throwing stones and objects in front of the European Parliament. The protest coincided with the Ukraine financing summit, where EU leaders were meeting to discuss financial aid for Ukraine.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo acknowledged the farmers' concerns and said “We need to be able to discuss in the (European) Council on this topic, because the concerns that they have are partly legitimate. The climate transition is a key priority for our societies. We need to make sure that our farmers can be a partner in this.”
The protest caused major traffic disruptions, with thousands of tractors blocking major roads and streets in the Belgian capital.
The farmers are demanding more support from the European Union, as they face rising costs and taxes.

I Amsterdam there was a large farm protest on the Dam square. The Durtch farmers support the Belgian and French Farmers protests of this week.
