I just went to rootsweb.com and linking to it, I found a Hungarian ancestry site there, which will be a good place for me to start. I will email the webmaster of that site to see if she can give me any tips to guide my search on her site or other sites.

Suzanne,
Rootsweb has many sites and most are very helpfull. I am on about four of them and have found a lot of help and information from the people on them. There is even a site for Polish food/recipe exchange.

Jim, Yes, Rootsweb.com seems like a massive and helpful wealth of information. As for the Polish food and recipe exchange - well, that sounds good! I love to cook As I had mentioned in an earlier post somewhere, I will sit down with my mom when she's here next month and figure out what information we have and what's lacking and then go from there, and Rootsweb will be one of the first places I go to.

Suzanne,
Collect all the information you can. Be sure to talk to your living relatives now. Get them on tape if you can. Be a pack rat and gather everthing you can old letters etc. It's a worthwhile trip.

Unfortunately, the only living relatives I have are my mother and 3 cousins (the daughers of my mom's deceased brother), and since these cousins don't know more about the family than I do, my mom is unfortunately the only resouce here. My mom has no aunts or uncles on my grandmother's side, as my grandmother grew up an only child (her brothers all died in childhood). Our family is pretty small!
But I will use your and Nancy's suggestion about tape recording what she says and I hope there's enough info for me to start a good search with. Wish me luck! I'm going to need it.....

Suzanne,
Don't forget the US Census information. You can look for names there. Also if you are catholic there are many chruches that have jubilee books out with information on parishoners.

Jim, Unfortunately, I don't think US Census info would be of help to me, as there aren't other relatives of ours in the US on my mom's side: my grandmother and grandfather emigrated by themselves, leaving their families behind, shortly after WWI. Then they met and married here. So there's no one else here in the US, certainly not from my grandmother's side.
My first task is to get the names of my grandmother's parents and their DOBs and places of birth and go backwards from there. THat's the missing Polish link.
I need to get a copy of my grandmother and grandfather's marriage license and see if that lists their parents' names. They were married in NYC around 1923-25, so that shouldn't be too hard. If that lists the parents' names, I can start working with Polish/Hungarian ancestry sites to go backwards. I've asked Mom to find me their date of marriage. Hopefully she has that info!

Suzanne, You may find it easier once you get to the files for Poland. I had the same situation. Parents came from Poland to the US. Once I had there names close to correct I found them at Ellis island and Bremen/Hamburg. Then to the towns and Churches in Poland.

Hi Jim, It's helpful to know what kind of trail you had to follow. I am curious to know what kind of immigration records we have for my grandparents. They lived in NYC so they obviously entered the country on a ship landing in New York Harbor, probably around 1919 or 1920, I would guess.

Suzanne, There is a directy of ship records at Morse. He has some good URL pointing to other sites as well. His site is stevemorse.org/ plus you can search Ellis island site and the Hamburg site. Your family most likely came through Ellis for those dates. Wheather they came from Hambur or Bremen you will have to research. They could have departed from other ports.
