Here in America - people do lots of shoppings just by use of the credit cards. I do not have more than 20 dollars in my purse usually. By the way, today I got the message from my credit card company that somebody was trying to buy the cloths in the upscale NYC store Valentino - for over 3 thousands dollars! Yes, I am not cheating, somebody got ahold of our credit card, we had to cancel. Happily this purchase did not go through... Be careful guys! Did you ever had similar problems? Did you ever try to buy cloths for over 3 K$ except maybe a wedding dress??? - maybe you did if this were not your own money...

Hello Jaga
People in Poland use credit cards, however they are not very popular. This is due to high requirements that you had to meet to get this type of card. Now they are much easier to get, however you must still meet some requirements, e.g. you must have a regular job, regular income, etc.
People usually use other type of card, I don't know correct english word - it is a card that you may use for withdrawning money from ATM, pay for shoppings, however - the amount of money you may use is limited to your actual bank account. It means - you may use money you have on your account, but cannot get credit, like in credit card.

Just as Yanc ahs said we don't use credit cards much. I'va got one only to be able to pay with it abroad. I'm afraid of getting into any debt, morgage is enough. Still, it's getting easier and easier to get one - there is a card advertised now for people with income as low as 500 PLN monthly ($120!!!). I guess the Polish are not very money-wise and more and more people are seriously in debts. Once my payment card was stolen and in one day I lost 600PLN ($150) and that was a real loss for me. Thank God the thieve went to TESCO not Valentino.

Yanc,
you talk about debit card probably. As for the credt cards in Poland, I think, one had to pay a special fee in Poland for using it. Here in the USA I can get money back just for using the creadit card.
Zooba,
welcome in our new forum, thanks for signing!

Jaga, It is interesting that you just now had a problem with a thief trying to use your credit card. Yesterday my husband got a statement for the card he uses - there were two charges on it totaling $800 that he had not made - I looked up one of the stores on-line Of course he immediately called the company to cancel the card. I think he was lucky only two charges had been made (about 2 weeks ago). I check my card on-line every couple of days to make sure there are no unapproved charges.

Pozdrawiam do wszyscy!
As a 20 year employee of one of the major credit card companies, I believe our data shows that card usage and acceptance is in fact on the way up, but that debit card usage (not credit, i.e. taking out a short term loan) is more prevalent. My contact in our Polish office is not in today, so hopefully I can chat with her online tomorrow and try to elaborate from something other then my poor memory!

Hi Nancy. I've been skulking through the woods in quest of tasty deer for a few days (we will be eating nutritious venison much of the winter I'm happy to report). Thanks for the greeting!

That is terrible news, Jaga, but at least you were able to stop this before the charges went through! And at least the credit card company alerted you.
This is why it's so important for people to carefully check credit card statements every month for unexplained charges, as well as check their credit report once a year.

Jaga,
Jim also has Chase. They said they will send an affadavit for him to sign that the charges were not authorized, and then - I hope - they better!- remove the charges.

Jaga, I hope - they better!- remove the charges. While all cards are different, most have a stipulation that you are not liable for any fraudulent charges, while some for no more the $50. Each card is different. Good Luck!

I must get at least one or two a day to apply for credit. I only have one credit card and one debit card. Better way to control my spending habits. The banks will give you what ever you want but just get in credit card debt and see what happens. I enjoy reading Suze Orman. She has lots of great advise.

Jaga, Of course he immediately called the company to cancel the card. I think he was lucky only two charges had been made (about 2 weeks ago). I check my card on-line every couple of days to make sure there are no unapproved charges. I have a credit card and the possibility to use it on the Internet. However, I haven`t made any operations yet, I am too afraid of spyware programs. Every month my scanners find one or two. The problems with unlawful card uses that you and others report are probably caused by cyber thieves. To tell the truth, I don`t need to use my credit card at all. It is just there, in case I really need some money fast. I use the bank machine card a lot, though, while paying in bigger shops.

There is a spaecial nbank card strictly for Internet transactions. It works like that: Let's say you want to bay something from Allegro (Polish equivalent of E-Bay). You transfer the money yuo need from your regulear account to the Internet card and then pay with the latter one. Whoever gets access to it can only steal very limited amount. It's safe (at least I think so), I've never had any problems with it.
