I recall that Piwo (is he here yet? piwo, where are you?) thought we should have one devoted to political threads, so that those of us not interested in such topics would not have to read them (same for genealogy, etc.)....We are always going off-topic, so how would that work?
Hi Nancy, I'm here! As to the question above:
It probably wouldn't work. After thinking over this question, I scanned many, many topic titles on the old forum; it would be difficult because “Polish Culture “, while sounding specific, is viewed more vaguely. Essentially, “anything and everything” makes up a given culture. Some boards, like cooking”, gardening, language, genealogy, art for example are topics that could easily be sub-divided. Just because a sub-board doesn't get lots of threads doesn't make it less valuable: it's an easy reference place to view all threads on that topic, or find a specific thread, or receipe and so forth. So much of this forum is looking at the news and commenting. This by its very nature is subjective, political and “anything goes”, which covers a wide spectrum of topics that could be construed as “culture”.
The other forum I participate in is of a topic more suited to sub-boards, and commentary on news events are just a discussion of news topics almost entirely unrelated to the Forum’s stated charter. They have a sub-board for those conversations, which tend to end up badly. I like the sub-board because I can just not go there and deal with the posters on the topic of the charter. Moderators keep off topic “hijacks” and political commentary out of discussions not on the threads topic. But once again, aside from some easy categories, it may not fit well with the topic, style nor temperament of posters here.
That's what I think anyway.
