and this is even more strange since father Rydzyk was very much against Poland being a part of EU!
Poland to channel EU millions into anti-Semitic radio station
(WARSAW) - A Polish ultra-Catholic radio station known for its anti-Semitic and anti-European bent has been selected to receive 15.5 million euros (21 million dollars) in EU funds to develop a journalism school, Polish government officials said Tuesday.
But European Commission officials said no final funding decision had been made for Radio Maryja, which figured on a list of 350 projects shortlisted by Poland for EU financing.
According to the Polish regional development ministry, the radio station's plan for an 18-million-euro school including the computer equipment had received backing for the EU money.
"This project conforms to the aims of the programme meant to promote technical and computer training," said the head of the ministry, Grazyna Gesicka.
But European Commission spokeswoman Katherina von Schnurbein stressed that the EU had not yet taken any decision as the Polish list had not yet been officially presented to Brussels.
EU members such as Poland were obliged to respect various European laws -- including ones that prohibit discrimination, she added.
Radio Maryja, founded 15 years ago by a Catholic priest, Tadeusz Rydzyk, frequently broadcasts nationalistic and anti-Semitic messages to a large audience.
Rydzyk was recently the target of 17 lawsuits sparked by anti-Jewish comments he made to students at his journalism school. But the suits were dropped last week when prosecutors decised the statements "were not of a prohibited nature".
