Late goal helps Poland rally for 2-2 draw with Portugal in Euro 2008 qualifier 1 day ago
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Jacek Krzynowek's 88th-minute rallied Poland to a 2-2 draw with Portugal in European Championship qualifying Saturday.
Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United put Portugal ahead in the 73rd with a slick volley, 23 minutes after teammate Maniche equalized Mariusz Lewandowski's 44th-minute opener.
Poland still leads Group A with 22 points from 10 games. Portugal has 16 from nine.
Portugal controlled from the start, although Ronaldo was slow to make a presence, eventually hitting the crossbar in the 27th off a free kick from 25 yards.
After Nuno Gomes had set Maniche up for the equalizer, the SL Benfica striker went close with a shot in the 58th.
Substitute Ricardo Quaresma marked his entry in the 71st with a shot wide, and then supplied Ronaldo with a cross for the go-ahead goal.
With time dwindling and it appearing Portugal would close on the group leader, Krzynowek struck on the counterattack, surprising goalkeeper Ricardo with a low drive for the equalizer.
Portugal next hosts Serbia on Wednesday, when Poland plays at Finland.
