Charles
The farmers usually use a Collie. They come in various mixtures of black and white patches, sometimes all black - I seem to remember having seen a brown one!
I've thought a little bit more on the words. When the dog is put through its paces in public this is a 'Sheepdog Trial'. Trail is used with dogs, usually those that are with packs that work with the Hunts, but a 'Hound Trail' is when dogs are working individually (perhaps from different packs) following a trail laid previously by a man with a rag soaked in aniseed. This tests which dogs are the best at following a scent - usually that of the live fox.
Leslie
Scatts are you knowledgeable on this subject - do you confirm my description or am I off the 'trail'?!

Thank You Leslie Another mystery solved. I readly understand that of a collie used by the farmers. They all seem to have a very gentle nature to them, also that being an excellent dog for being around children. Up untill now, I had not thought of the trial and trail with compation. Makes good sense and rings a bell from past memories of auto contest being called trials. There were {in photos} some very interesting home built specials. {opps, off topic} sorry Charles
