It is from New Zealand but both of you were close since it had to be in the Southern Hemisphere

Is that a sign of a seal. My first thought was a penguin and it was too wam for antarctica so I thought further North but if NZ then they must be the seals there.

I will go with penguin. Seals do not walk. They also do not have beaks.
Just to complete the 2 cent talk, penguins are only in the southern hemisphere and polar bears are only in the north, so they never meet ...
By the way, incidents of polar bears coming inland, farther south are becoming more common. It seems hunger and a lack of sea ice are forcing their adaptation to our warmer world. I hope so anyhow!
