- CIA Affair: EU Threatens Members With Drastic Penalties
The EU Commission has threatened drastic sanctions in case one of the member states operated secret prisons for the CIA. Penalties could go as far as revoking voting rights in the European Council, judicial commissioner Frattini said. The EU Treaties provide for possible penalties for sustained violation of freedom, democracy, human rights, and legality. Operating CIA prisons for terror suspects constitutes a violation of the European Human Rights Convention.

Putin is not getting false information on his desk like it was the case with Jelcyn. Being formerly a top policeman in USSR prepared to swallow many painful news I think. Still I don't think he is the right man to do the job of transforming Russia into something bearable to its people and international community. I agree with those who say we need several generations to go by so homosovietics die out and Russia's people make their own orange revolution or something similar. Now in many Russia's families there are relatives responsible for crimes on other family members and that is alone hard to come in terms with. Taking blame for the Baltic states, Poland is beyond Russia's comprehension now.

Forsa I had earlier this day, deleted out, a post of this nature. The reason: This is a Polish forum constituting both Polish nationals and American/Polish folks; representation including Australia, Netherlands. My reason of doing so, not to risk poisoning the well of understanding. Your post reply though, opened up the gates of understanding. With this in mind, please do consider some of the following post, as meaningful in the light of a post exchange for the purpose of exchange in terms of bringing forth a light of understanding with out exterior motives. Some years past, Vladimir Putin, presented a speech in the German Bundestag. It was first in Russian, then in German, it was long and very enlightening in as much to his outline of forth coming economic strategies of his design. medienkritik.typepad.com/blog/2005/04/the_german_left.htmlAbove is a fairly currant out line of Valimer Putin. This should not be allowed to happen as long as there is no democracy in Russia or EU has efficient ways of defending itself from possible attack from Russia. This is also I think official standing of polish foreign policy namely to have US security guarantees for EU going. I agree with those claiming that Russia has in reality a deep contempt for Europe and more for Poland and the Baltic states. It measures itself in comparison with US and considers Europe weak (militarily and that matters to Russia) The reforms Putski talks about so loudly are not deep enough. Appointed from Kremlin apparatchiks rule throughout Russia as always. Even in terms of economy Russia is not considered "a free economy state". Chechnya, border conflicts with Estonia, suppressing budding civil society, interference in Ukraine elections are sure signs that Russia is NOT predictable. bescheid,
We know Germans are culturally fixed on Russia, its Slavic soul etc, etc In history it was Poland standing on the way for closer contacts. Luckily German democracy is the strongest in Europe and if I am to make a choice of HOPE between democratic Russia or democracy in Germany the last one is my option. In Poland this warming between Putin and Schroeder was not taken lightly. Two days ago Angela Merkel who is new PM (chancellor) was in Poland and she and others in Germany are to "consult" Poland in contacts with Russia. We shall see.

Forza Yes, absolutely do I agree with you! And more so.. As people, we are all stuck between our status in life, and the decisions made for us by our leadership. And, it is always the people that will suffer or gain by these decisions. I think perhaps though, some fault lays in thinking that was formed from the past, then carried to the present, to form a basis for the future. Our world though, is moving too quickly to keep up and adjust to the rapid changes that confront us. There simply is not the luxury of time for each generation to over come old prejudices and old scores to settle, and at same time, to deal with currant and present issues. au.news.yahoo.com/051202/15/x23c.htmlThe above is perhaps the meeting you were referring to. At risk of over doing this, I would like to include a recent speech of the new Chancellor, Angele Merkel. With her, a new energy is becoming a reality.

01.12.2005 Chancellor Merkel presents government programmer in parliament
A confident Angela Merkel presented the programme of her broad-based coalition to parliament in Berlin Wednesday (30 Nov.) as the first woman chancellor in the history of Germany. Merkel was assured of support from across the political spectrum when she began her speech by saying that Germany would not give in to the terrorists holding a German woman and her Iraqi driver hostage in Iraq. "We are not open to blackmail," Merkel told the Bundestag. "We cannot relent in the fight against international terrorism... It targets our entire value system ... If we were to surrender these values we would surrender ourselves." Merkel appealed to the courage of Germans in general, urging the country to move away from the welfare state that had brought security but was stifling the economy. "Let us dare to allow greater freedom, let us release the brakes on growth," she said, as she outlined her dreams of a high-tech future based on investment in education, research and development. As head of an unusual government that combines the traditional foes of German politics, the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats, Merkel sought consensus in her address. Merkel pledged her government would support the entrepreneurial middle class with cuts to company taxes and bureaucracy. She committed Germany to the role of honest broker on behalf of the less powerful member states of the European Union, reaffirming positions staked out during her lightning tour of European capitals immediately after taking office last week.
In her closing address, the new chancellor called on Germans to take a positive can-do attitude and to look out for the possible, rather than highlight the difficulties. "Let's surprise ourselves with what is possible. Let's surprise ourselves with what we are capable of," she said.
