Dear Ms. Urban-Klaehn I am writing a book based on a 13 year old girl's memory of her year in POW camp in WWII. I am trying to research Polish Christmas meals and have a menu for the 12 course, meatless Wigilia. However, I have been unable to discover what foods are served on Christmas day (First Holiday), other than the fact that meat is allowed. Can you direct me to a source? Your assistance is appreciated. Peace and Prayers, ... Santa Fe, New, Mexico

I think for Christmas Day we were eating the leftovers from Christmas Eve. We also ate bigos after midnight service. We were eating also ham and lebkuchen (pierniki).
If you have any more info please share it with us!

First of all - we do not have turkey, never ever. We might have duck (although unlikely) but not turkey.
Basically we eat what's left - on this day it is difficult to eat at all. Everybody is full. In my family, to activate the bowels and have some relief we drink special compote made of prunes and other dried fruit, very spicy and excellent laxative.
