Here is a photo from Polish Beskidy - which are foothills compared to Alpine Tatras. This photo is from the village Obidza where I spend a summer as a child. We were caught there during the flood. The only bridge which was connecting this village to the world was damaged by high water. We had to walk several km to another village to get some transportation. We were eating mushrooms for breakfast, lunch and dinner since there were so many mushrooms after the rain and flood, in the forest and we could not buy too much of other food Anyways

Tatras are extremely crowded. Beskid are also beautiful but serene. So, my advice is to go to Zakopane, Kasprowy Wierch, some valleys but then go back to Beskidy or cross the boarder and see Slovakia's site since it is much less crowded.
