I believe I have this pastel portrait of Countess Sophie Potocka. It was sent from Berlin to Canada during WW2 by a Canadian soldier. There is smoke residue on frame. Beautiful picture this portrait I believe was last seen in Berlin in the 1940s. Any info will help greatly thank you please email me johnnypoolboy@gmail.com Attachments:

Yes I believe it is the original it was taken from a museum in Berllin during ww2. A soldier sent it to his parents along with metals and a letter. The painting is at my uncles. I'm trying to find out info for him. This painting should be in a museum and not tucked away in my uncles closet.

Johny,
you should show this painting to the expert in the art museum (curator) to check whether this is the original or the copy of original. Since the same paintings (like yours) are already available online, I am not sure whether this is the oryginal. In the past they made copies of oryginals which were real paintings, made with real paint etc. If this is a real painting or even a copy, but a good one, it should be in Poland. Maybe you should contact Polish embassy or a consulate eventually?

Johnny, as far as I know the original belonged to the Berlin Royal Museum. Did you ask there?

The picture shown by you, Johnny5, and mentioned by polpolishmama (reply from 2:45 pm) is that of a copy of the original pastel, and the copy probably is made by Kucharsky. This copy is sold within an auction at Bonhams in London. You find this in www.batguano.com (the worlds greatest expert of paintings by Vigèe-Lebrun - page 95-, who was supposed first to be the creator).Within the first half of the 20th century 4 possible painters of the original are mentioned: Vig-Leb., Graff, Kauffmann, at last Tonci.- The original belonged to the Berlin "Kupferstichkabinett", until in 1945 the Museum was destroyed and the original supposed to be burned. There have never been made coloured photographs of the original, only black/white prints. Yuo'll find one i.e. in Gustav Kobbé: The Loves of Great Composers. New York 1905. Or in Witt's Library - one of the world's greatest collections of art photographs, which contains of a picture (bl/wh); also in other sources, i.e. the old catalogues in Berlin. Johnny, so the best way to get senseful information is to contact the actual "Berlin Gemäldegalerie, Kupferstichkabinett". You'll find it easily in the www. I know what I say because I dealt intensively with another copy of the original, made by a young painter in about 1900!

It was shipped from Berlin to California to my parents after the death of my grandfather. I now have it.
