Polish monks to open chain of heavenly food shops
Created: Thursday, May 10. 2007
Poles, both faithful and unfaithful will soon be able to buy jam, made for their vice or virtue, when the Benedictine monks of Tyniec open a chain of shops selling their food.
According to Father Zygmunt Galoch who is in charge of the monks' commercial affairs, they are planning to open more than 100 franchise outlets with sixty of them to be opened before the end of the year.
Products to be offered include pear and apple "angelic jam", zesty lemon "unfaithful jam", and even cinnamon, raisin and apricot "prayer book jam". They are already available online at www.benidicite.pl.
The new chain of shops will also sell cheeses, herbal teas, fruit syrups, prepared meat products and alcoholic beverages, which will be all sold under the "Benedictine Products" label.
All the products are organic and produced either by the monks or by small family businesses located in the vicinity of the monastery, near the southern Polish city of Krakow.
The Tyniec monks claim they have plenty of customers and the new online store is the extension of their operations.
According to Galoch, one can find plenty to choose there from.
“We have been praised for our dried fruits, juices, jams as well as lard and mushroom in wine” he says. “I have recently visited monasteries in Hungary, Spain, Italy and Switzerland and was inspired by their products” he adds. The result of this visit is the planned launch of a new line of natural cosmetics based on a license from Italian monks.
Franchisees will help to fund the monks' plans to go forth and multiply the number of shops selling their products. (ds
