This shows the great altruistic side of America. Brotherhood, solidarity, cooperation, love and compassion. In 911 we were with America with our hearts, souls and minds. It was like if they had attacked us. In the Netherlands we thought this was the most important time in our lives. This event, this tragedy would change our lives forever. (I asked several people what they did that day, were they were and how they experianced it. Everybody knew where he or she was and how he or she experianced the news. I was working in a nursing home back then, and I did not have television nor a radio there back then. So I heard all the rumors and speculations. It was like science fiction. I thought that all over the USA planes were hitting cities and targets overthere. Not only New York and Washington D.C. and Pensylvenia, but also Chicago and LA. This rumors prooved to be false thank god, but the attacks and thousands of death were worse enough, and for days and weeks then news was only about 911, the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, the developments in the US and etc.)
This was the general opinion that day and the days that came after that. We didn't forget that the Americans and the Canadians liberated us at the end of the second world war. Dutch people and other Europeans who were liberated by the USA will never forget that. They (we) feel very connected to the USA. There is a very strong Transatlantic alliance. Even some or many of the most Eurosceptic Europeans feel very connected to the USA. They don't see a united Europe, but see a Transatlantic alliance between the European nations and the USA. Great Britain is an example of that. Great Britain has a strong and ever lasting alliance with the USA, and that is good. (First world war, Second world war, the Korean war, the First and Second Gulf war and etc.) In that day I realised and felt what it means to be, to live in and are connected to the West. We felt immediately that war was coming and that we were part of that war against terror. We didn't knew that the Iraq war would come, but we knew that a war against Al Qaida, the Taliban and every state or organisation which supported them would start soon!
