My Polish Canadian neighbor just bought a Polish Christmas card with a picture of Madonna in one of the Hallmart stores here. She asked me what Madonna is it and I could not tell her that. It does not look like Czestochova Madonna because it does not have the two cuts of the face. I am suspect that this Madonna is not a copy of any real Polish Madonna face but I may be wrong. Anybody can help?

Jaga, Not sure but mosttof the time if the drawing is of a real painting the informations would be on the back of the card. There are many Madonna and Child paintings and iconic images.

Perhaps the designer of the card looked at an original painting and changed it, so that it would not be a possible copyright infringement.
What does it say on the lower left part of the image - looks like a few letters, maybe a name?

It appears to me that this is just a "sweetened" version of Our Lady of Czestochowa. All details of the clothing (even the draping of the veil), colors, markings, etc. are the same as the real thing. The positions of the hands are identical to the original and the Holy Child's book is similar. I would think it is an artist's more modern version of O.L. of C with the faces looking more "up to date" and free of the cut marks. That's how I see it; anybody else?

Ladies,
I agree with all your comments. It may be that they changed the face a bit so... that it would be legal to print. My neighbor said that she would not sent this card to anybody because it is too ... cheesy

It is cheesy! Here's the real thing for comparison: I knew it would come in handy one day!

Scatts,
thanks for posting. There is a huge difference between the "real thing" and this postcard....
I am still thinking though that it may be the copy of a different simple icon, especially when I look at small Jesus face.

I think the composition is far to similar to that of the Black Madonna for it to be anything other than a cheesy copy of that. I know Madonna and Child scenes are all quite similar in some ways but this has everything in the same place, which must be a very rare chance that it will be matching any other painting. With the Polish connection as well............
