Eric, I hope that this anti-immigrant backlash would go away, since this was clearly and overreaction.

Eric
That of your reply, I do find a great deal of agreement with you. Owing to have worked and lived in Canada, I think though, you will find a great deal of disagreement with Canadians with any complicity with the USA other then mutual co-operation on common interest. The Canadians are a very proud people and rightly so, for theirs also is a land of immigration and with this, some very viewable differences between the French Quebec regions in the East, and British Canadians from the East central to their West Coast. These issues have not been consolidated with resolutions, but have been amended in commendable manners both find livable.
Yes, often has fault been placed against many Americans for their seemingly ignorance of foreign affairs out side of the US. It would be a matter of opinion if this could be construed as ignorance as such. We must take into understanding, one as you have rightly so indicated, America has only two borders, one being to the North as Canada whilst to the South is Mexico. Other wise, both East and West borders are the Pacific and Atlantic. Most foreign news of worth, is a world away to many Americans with out any other meaning other then world news.
Americans are very hard workers with a strong work ethic that is most admirable to those of us across the pond. With this, is a great question to many of us, and the situation of unemployment? For the American industry would over whelm us in simply just a few months if it was every geared up with production lines at capacity. But then, perhaps we must thank our lucky stars this is not the case, once our VW skandle has run the course, our diesel motors will then comply and life will go on.

I just finished a Thanksgiving dinner with my sister, brother in law, and the neighbors next door, near Phoenix, Arizona. During the dinner the neighbor lady commented that after 50 years in America, her English accent still brings out comments of " I knew you are not from here" from strangers now and then.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! This is the day we celebrate the Indians and their lax immigration controls. Maybe their is good reasons to fear people with strange religions, strange skin color, with lots of filth and disease, and who may take everything we own.... It happened to the Indians.

One can become a total stranger even in one's own household, and long standing friends. This can happen when one has a spiritual experience: a confrontation that can be both decisive and apocalyptic. The most famous example was of course Saul of Tarsus traveling on the road to Damascus, who later became Paul. And the rest they say....is history.

Pieter, it is always hard to be considered different, not that "pure". I remember the importance of "small heimat" (small motherland) in Silesia where people from outside were treated as a thread, but the outsiders did not understand local values. Still for you spending so much time and life in Arnhem and being not considered one of them is frustrating. Dear Jaga, My latest reply had elements of Kai's story. Your version of the 100% national, regional and local people, Kai, was the excellent example of Fairbanks, " The truly respectable people were in town 2 and even 3 generations!" This localism and regionalism is very present in the Netherlands too. A college of mine is a interviewing tv journalist, and I am her cameraman for ' This is Arnhem' ( Dit is Arnhem). One day we filmed an interview with an Arnhem artist, who is rooted in an Arnhem family of generations. My college is also part of such a family. Since I am interested in art and have the same sort of background as the artist I participated in the conversation. [/i][/quote]

Ron, glad you had a nice Thanksgiving and adding a comment about being 50 years here. We had a nice Thanksgiving with friends. My husband prepared turkey as he does every year. We also had a beautiful fresh snow, which you would not experience in Arizona.
