Russia; 49 Dead From Alcohol Poisoning in City of Irkutsk
As of Monday, the number of deaths from alcohol poisoning in Siberia has increased to at least 49 after the victims drank a contaminated bath lotion that has a deadly methanol content.
On the same day, Irkutsk local officials declared a state of emergency in the city and conducted house to house search operation, while the Russian government also imposed a stricter regulation of the alcohol in the market.
Due to Russia’s economic decline under the effect of Western sanctions and a collapse in oil prices in the recent years, the market sales for lotion and tinctures that have alcohol content increased. Poisonings with surrogate alcohol seem to be a regular thing in Russia, but the recent incident in Irkutsk is the most tragic in years.
Russia’s top investigative agency has conducted an investigation into the fatal incident and arrested people who have involvement in selling the contaminated lotion.
According to the report, police found that the contaminated lotion has levels of deadly methanol content and antifreeze. They also discovered underground facilities that produce lotion imitations and confiscated 500 liters (132 gallons) of the substance at about 100 shops in Irkutsk.
Officials stated that the lotion’s bottle packaging have clear warnings that the product contains ethyl alcohol and not intended to consume internally, where in fact, it contains levels of deadly methanol.
Alexander Semyonov, a local prosecutor said that since the weekend the number of deaths has been continuously rising to at least 49 and another 8 victims are still in the hospital in serious condition. Officials were still doing search operations of apartments and other locations to look for other victims.
Russian authorities across the country also launched a series of the search operations to confiscate surrogate alcohol.
‘Authorities should quickly ban surrogate alcohol’
Meanwhile, Dmitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman called the mass poisoning as a “terrible tragedy,” adding that the Russian President has been informed about the tragic incident.
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev expressed his disappointment during a cabinet meeting. Medvedev said makers of surrogate alcohol have been increasingly competing with legal alcohol. He also said that authorities should quickly ban surrogate alcohol before it affects the whole industry.
“It’s an outrage, and we need to put an end to this,” he said in televised remarks.
