This is the power and magic of power. Emmanual Macron wanted to stay next to the most powerful and influential man in the world. Trump looked more powerful and relaxed in his meeting with Putin than Putin himself.

For this photo it appears Macron was correct in seeking the 'outside' place next to Trump, as the two newest of world leaders. Unfortunately the press always seems to emphasize the negative, so this story is told as Trump gets a lesson in humility (as if he has any concept of humility!)
President Donald Trump found himself a fringe player at the G20 in Hamburg, Germany – at least in the annual 'family photo.' Protocol for this particular meeting of world leaders dictates that those who have been in office the longest occupy the center positions when they gather to say 'cheese.' The only exception is the host nation, whose leader – in this case German Chancellor Angela Merkel – gets the prime slot, front-and-center. Trump, who became president less than seven months ago, was positioned near the end of the first row – with only French prime minister Emmanuel Macron to his outside. Trump and Macron were seen chatting amiably, with the pair set to meet in Paris for Bastille Day on July 14.
