I accept and appreciate the present Dutch monarchy, but in heart I believe in the Dutch republic and in hearty I am a Dutch Patriot in the historical sense ( Patriots vs Orangists) and slightly Republican in the Dutch European context. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriottentijden.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_RepublicP.S.- I am absolutely not an American Republican. In the USA I would probably be a classical liberal Independent voter or a moderate democrate, not associated with the far left wing of the Democratic party and also not connected to the Dixiecrats. A Centrist Democrat?

Pieter,
I am not sure you wrote directly about it, but carrots used to be purple and white. Dutch worked on making it orange partly to memorize Wilhelm Orange. I cannot even imagine carrots not to be orange due to its carotene content, but this was apparently the case.
Here is more:
In the 17th century, Dutch growers cultivated orange carrots as a tribute to William of Orange – who led the the struggle for Dutch independence – and the color stuck. A thousand years of yellow, white and purple carrot history was wiped out in a generation
