Here is a letter I received from Hanna Sawka, a daughter of Hanka, the author of the "At Hanka's Table:http://culture.polishsite.us/articles/art326.html
they are expecting a baby soon and they were looking for dafe toys. It seems that Poland has it in abundance! By the way, I have several wooden toys for Ela at home. We love it! They are fun and much safer than all these plastics!
Here are fragments of Hanka's letter:
My husband and I are expecting a baby very soon (my due date is
December 9th!). Because of this, we have been looking into non-toxic,
natural, yet educational toys for babies. I don't know if you are
aware, but thousands of plastic toys are being recalled in the US -
every month a new one - due to high concentrations of lead used in the
plastics. This has made my husband and me very careful, especially as
babies like to chew on stuff. At first, we thought that our best
option were toys made in Germany (such as Haba brand toys). To our
surprise, however, we discovered that some incredibly beautiful toys
that fit the non-toxic and natural bill are made in Poland!
Surprisingly, Polish on-line shops do not carry them, but a few are
available through Amazon (thank goodness for us!). Eventually, I
found that they have their own website and I'll be ordering through
them directly. I think the story behind these charming toys is very
interesting - a sculptor and architect came up with this idea and he
designs the toys. They have actually won some really prestigious
awards at Toy and Design fairs in Europe. I'm sure that other people
like myself of Polish background in America would be interested in
hearing about this success story that is so wonderfully rooted in
Polish tradition, so I wanted to let you know about it. My favorite
is a "Cracow dragon" that flaps its red wings when pulled! That's a
toy for our boy to use when he is a little bigger, though.
