Since I came to the US I realized that astronomy here is an important subject, much more important than in Poland where we had just one year of astronomy at school. This is probably due to the fact that the exploration of cosmos is much more advanced here.
My daughter right now knows all about planets in the solar system, their names, their characteristics. Kids had astronomy nights at school etc.
On the other hand - the geography, knowledge of the other countries is way behind here. I was talking to 10-11 years boy scouts recently about Poland. They had very little knowledge about countries in the world. Sometimes they did not even see a difference between the countries and the continents.
So, American kids are ready to go to stars but they do not know too much about what is outside their own country....

;D Jaga. If a person does not know about places and people on our own planet, it makes little sense for them to know about anything ouside of our athmosphere. If you don't know where you are at or where you are going, You'll get there plenty fast Having a knowledge of Earth is just a stepping stone in learning about the cosmos.
