Well folks, I finally got my computer back with new hard drive and more RAM. I got my scanner working and thought a couple of pictures might interest some of you. This one is of my Grandmother on the left, and her sister. It was taken just before she left for America. She never saw her siblings or parents again. This one was sent to my Grandmother (it's one of her brothers) with a note on the back saying, "Keep this as a remembrance as we may never see each other again." Does anyone recognize the uniform? Take a look at his shoes, they are pretty beat up and flimsy looking... Mary

Mary, Where were they from? Northern Poland? Wayne thinks the uniform may be Prussian (the slanted pocket on the jacket and the cuffs seem to indicate Prussian origin as well as cockades on his hat. He is an enlisted soldier as he is wearing a bayonet frog (carrier) and that also explains the reason for the flimsy looking shoes. Enlisted soldiers were issued shoes and officers privately purchased more substantial shoes and boots. Hope this helps!

Chris, I'm still not sure where they were from, but from everything I have gathered I would say the northern part of Poland would be correct. My grandmothers Ship Manifest papers say Galicy, Polish. Arrival Aug. 3, 1904, 17 yrs old, departed from Bremen, Germany, on the ship Grosser Kurfurst. Mary

Mary Thank you so much for posting those photos of your grandmother, her sister and one of your grandmother's brothers - excellent. I love seeing old photographs of days gone by, so here is one you will not be boring by posting others! I love to see the clothes that were worn in those days and comparing them with today's selection. Make sure you keep the originals safe - they are part of your heritage. Leslie

This is my Great Grandfather (paternal) who was the first of my family to immigrate to America. Of course this was taken much later in life. I think somewhere around Rochester, NY. He was 40 yrs old, from Ganza, Poland and arrived in the US on May 25, 1893. His family followed 13 months later. He sailed on the Strassburg out of Bremen, Germany.

These next two pictures are of my grandmothers brother, I'm not sure, but I think it is the same brother in the uniform (posted before) and his wife is the woman in the photo. The close up shows how tattered his clothes are at that time. I have no dates on these but it must have been a very hard time and place to live in.

This is probably a confirmation picture. My grandmother has a large candle in her right hand and a bible and rosary in her left. My great grandparents are the others. GGM wasn't a beauty, but look at what she had to wear... I'd look sour too! I am told this is a sister of my grandmothers, with her husband

These girls were my grandmothers nieces. Take a look at those hats and fur collars, these gals were stylin! These are the same girls I believe. They are standing in front of the same house as their parents in a former picture. This picture is dated 1948, so the parents picture would no doubt be the same. also written on the back are the names Lodka & Ania. Notice the pretty wooden door.

This is one of my mystery photos, (I have an envelope full) I am still trying to identify the people here. I thought the dreary brick background and the dirt street speaks of how conditions might have been if this was the best they could do for a family photo. Obviously they have their "good" clothes on.

This photo is not as old as the others. It was taken in front of my fathers homestead in Clarendon PA. The shorter woman is my mother back when she was dating my dad, and the tall woman is my Aunt Helen. They both have birthdays coming up in Feb. Mom will be 80 on the 7th. and Helen will turn 90 on Valentines day, the 14th. Helen is one of my tall aunts I had mentioned in a previous post.

Mary, The ribbon he is wearing on his collar may give us a clue about his military service - we are (as in Wayne) doing some research to find out more about that particular decoration. it may or may not be of interest - just thought I'd let you know. PS Do you know where Mt. Oliver is?
