Hello,
I am a Babkowski/Bobkowski family researcher in the USA. My patriarch in Augustow Poland was Felix Bobkowski, who married twice in the late 1800s and had at least 8 children that came to the US between 1880 and 1911. Some lived in villages such as Brzozowka and Strekowizna. Some family may also have migrated to Warsaw. I know of some cousins in Augustow and Strekowizna but I don't have email addresses, and I don't speak any Polish. If you think you can help me, I'd be grateful for your response. I plan to visit that area with my family in June. I would be willing to share my research, which accounts for all of my Babkowski/Bobkowski kin in the USA. Thanks in advance. Email swartzfamily2001@yahoo.com
Peace and regards, Tom

Hello Tom, wlecome to the forum! Not everybody, especially in the countryside in Poland knows e-mail but probably some of your family has a telephone or at least you can find their address. The problem is - to be able to communicate. Please check Nancy and mine articles on genealogy: culture.polishsite.us/smgenealogy.htmlthey have several links, Nancy has also information about people who can help you in Poland to continue your search it is also good to create a genealogical website

Tom, Could Bobowski have become Bobowik somewhere along the way? This just a shot in the dark but it may mean something to you. My mother's Ellis island passenger precord indicates she was going to a Zofiia Czichorowa or some spelling like that. It is difficult to read the European style handwrinting on the microfilm records. Zofia married a a Bobowik probably around 1920. They lived in Brooklyn, NY and later in Jersey City, NJ. I had a conversation with a Bobowik family member, while doing my own genealogical research and she told me that as a child she had heard the town of Augustow mentioned many times by her parents. May I suggest you check the Ellis Island passenger records for your family. The are easy to use and free of charge. Good luck. Joan

Joan,
If you have the Ellis island manifest you have the town name. It may not be spelled correct but it is the best starting point you have. Then you can search the records for that town. Church or civil.

Thank you for the pointers, they were very helpful. I have had some success using the www.poltran.com website to translate Polish text to English. It is a nice site, since you can send many paragraphs of text at a time. As for the towns where my family originated, I know Augustow, Strekowizna, and Brzozowka, for sure, but as for where the rest of the family "went" in the early 1900s, I have no guesses, except some of them ended up in Warsaw. The ellis island web site was helpful in providing some town names, but for many of my cousins it listed Suwalki as a province, not a city (now I think the province is Podlaskie). I just now got an email reply from a Babkowski cousin in Augustow, so the ball is rolling, so to speak. Thanks again. Peace and regards, Tom
