Police officer Luuk is still impressed by the rescue that he and his colleagues did on Wednesday on the A65 near Berkel-Enschot. A probably confused man ran onto the highway there and the officers managed to pull the man off the highway just before the oncoming traffic. "I'm glad this was filmed," he told the Broadcast Corporation Brabant radio program WAKKER! (Awake!)
Luuk was already on the road with other officers when a motorist parked his car on the hard shoulder of the A65. “We had received a report of a man crossing the highway. At first with his bike. Then we quickly turned around and arrived at the place where everything was filmed by that motorist.”
The moment Luuk and his colleagues arrived, the man had already climbed over the guardrail. “We wanted to talk to that man, but unfortunately we couldn't. He started running again and we immediately ran after him and the three of us overpowered him and pulled him to the hard shoulder."
“It went well, but when I see the images afterwards, I'm actually shocked by how it went. But we're glad no one was killed. We are also very happy with the reporter who also helped us with the arrest of that man.”
Luuk does not mind that the rescue action was recorded by a dashcam. “I actually think it's nice that these images have been shared and I also think it's nice that the whole of the Netherlands now sees that we also do these kinds of things. And that we are also just there for the citizen when something like this happens.”
“I've had a lot of apps and the colleagues who were involved have also received a lot of messages. Yes, that's really nice. People call you a hero, but I think that's a bit exaggerated. We are police officers, we like to do it and this is why we joined the police.”
When I see the images afterwards, I am shocked. But yes, it went well, there were no deaths. It ended well.
