I am so happy to say that I have started our family tree and have found much good information and hope to be able to at least have the family lineage completed from my Great Grandparents to present done by the family reunion in mid-July 2008.
Of course I want to find more about past relatives but I will be happy for the time being to get this much done.
Google is a godsend, and I have bought 5 books that are a tremendous help. Also, I just started recording in a program called PAF (personal ancestrial file) and it's such a great tool!!!
My cousin has some pictures, letters and documents that she is giving me when she gets to her winter home in about a month. I feel like a child waiting for Christmas!
How very glad I am that I called her when I did.... She said she was about to throw the stuff out, as she has no interest in the family history. She said it was just junk cluttering up her house since moving it there when they sold her mothers home last month.
I'll let you all know what treasures I find when I go through it.

Mary,
Did you buy your PAF or do you have the free version. What are th pros , cons of the system. I have been toying with a family tree but at present would just like to locate my uncle who moved to UK (now deceased) It would be nice to find his family. Every so often I will start a Google hoping to one day hit pay dirt. As far as Ancestors dot com and other programs you have to pay for ...I don't know. I don't care for the idea of having to pay for service I am not even sure will be helpful. I know most is long and tedious work so unless truly committed may take forever.

Yes it could take forever as you said. I have been trying to find out what happened to my great-grandmother for years. I have gotten pretty serious of late though. The PAF is only for entering information to help build a family tree. It won't help you find someone, with the exception of picking up some info off another family member that might give a clue. Like a town of church where you could start looking. I got the free version. They do gave an upgrade that is under $7.00 but I haven't gotten that far yet. I will see what it looks like get after I have input all the family info. Then I'll see if I want the upgrade. I believe the upgrad just makes it look better and easier to read. It's not hard to work with after you get used to it. Just put in a family member's info and you can keep giongback and editing if you want to. It links all families by the surname and I'd recomend it to anyone starting out like me and doesnt know where to start. I will complete this first then start looking again for great-grandma. I think I will find some clues along the way. Not until starting this did I know how many family members we have. I put in over 127 persons in the last two nights. There are 2 generations to go...!!! The younger ones I have no info on because no one ever recorded it, but at least most are living and their little ones. I have a letter to go out asking for updated info. I just hope everyone responds, you know there's always someone who "doesn't have time". I hope you find your uncle's family. It's kind of exciting isn't it? Mary

Mary I am working blindly here so it would be very hard to find anything unless I stumble over it by accident. My mom received a letter from him and pictures (same with my aunt's in Poland) of his wife and children. We do not know their names, wifes or the children's. Don't know name of the town he moved to and he has passed away in the 70's. His children must be about my age or slightly younger so I am counting on finding them or their kids. (hoping maybe they might be doing same and we will one day connect)

I think it would be so great to be able to contact and perhaps meet our relatives across the Atlantic! I wish you best of luck! And if I find anything that may be of help to you I will pass it along. It seems my great-grandfather did NOT remarry before my great- grandmother immigrated here with their 4 children. I found that there was almost 4 years between the births of the last child in first marriage and the first child of the second marriage......SO, I have learned; don't believe everything you hear! Best of luck! Mary

Mary..did you see the show about autism on GMA last week. (or a few weeks ago) It was in regards to Jenny McCarthy who has an autistic child and so she changed his diet and this seemed to have a enourmous affect on him.

(or a few weeks ago) It was in regards to Jenny McCarthy who has an autistic child and so she changed his diet and this seemed to have a enourmous affect on him. Yes, I sure did, and many other shows since. I bought the book that Jenny wrote too. A wonderful read for anyone who wants to know what a struggle these parents have to get their children the care and services they need. So much of the book could have been written by my own daughter. Larry King had a show about a week ago, Mon or Tues, where the second half was about the recient American Pediatrics Association recommends all pediatricians test all children (as part of their normal child care appointments) TWICE before the age of two. This is BIG!!! Early diagnosis is key to getting these kids help and turning things around. They had 4 people on the pannel with Larry King and a person from one of the Autism Associations by remote. The people on the pannel all had autistic kids. One was a Doctor and 3 celebrities. Gary Cole and John Schnider (Bo Duke from Dukes of Hazzard fame), both are actors, and Jenny McCarthys friend Holly Robinson Peete, celebrity and husband a football player. My daughter actually got through the line and was the caller from "Pleasantville, Pennsylvania". She asked if any of them had gotten their kids pets or service dogs and saw a difference after the animal came into their lives. All their heads started nodding before she was even through. They have all had great success with the animals as we have with my grandson. I think you can probably still get the transcript for that show on the CNN site under Larry King Show. It's really interesting. If I was to give 1 bit of advice to a family with a new diagnosis of autism it would be to get their child to a specialist asap and have them checked for diet/alergy issues. Almost all autistic kids have some, if not a lot, of these issues and can be helped with the right diet and suppliments. Thank you for asking! I'm so glad that autism is starting to get the press and attention that has been way over due. It's affecting way too many families and knowledge is power! Mary
