Some surnames that I'm unsure about. Revers (austrian?} buried in polish national catholic cemetary Ziolkowska (where in poland?) Patrykus (lithuanian?) catholic Any information or guidance is appreciated. As a third generation american, my knowlege of northern and eastern europe is very limited, and the history seems very complex. Ziółkowski, Ziółkowska is a common surname in Poland. They appear everywhere. I have met many so far. I have never heard of Patrykus or Revers.

I think the proper spelling was rewers. I know that this relative spoke polish, russian, and german. then learned english. He was always very evasive when asked about the "old country" maybe on the lamb from the law!! I have found rewers in warsaw in the 1840's.
Is ski/ska gender specific?
In poland, do the women usually take the mans surname or do they keep their own? curiously, the surnames that are more common only indicate a higher likelyhood of male childeren than true reproductive output.
thanks for replying to my post.

Frankly, I am a louse expert at genealogy. I have never been interested in it. Yes, ski is a male and ska a female. Most women, I can roughly estimate about 90%, take their husband`s surname. The remaining part keeps maiden name and adds husband`s to it, while the least numerous group, about 1%, keeps their own. It applies to women who already made a career and are known in Poland before getting married or who married men with stupid surnames, e.g., Psikutas (Dogprick). It is very well rendered in the last seconds of this fragment Sorry, I must be dumb lately, but I don`t understand this remark.
