How can people be so brutal? Killing children, women and men in that way? What a dark history of NKVD Soviet terror, Luthuanian Ultra Nationalist antisemitic terror and Nazi terror. I don't know if I want to ever visit Lithunia after knowing this? Unfortunately the world has learned little from the Soviet terror from 1922 until 1991, the Italian Fascist terror from 1922 until 1943 and the Fascist Italian Social Republic 1943–1945, and very litle from the Nazi street and state terror from the late twenties to the forties.
If we look at the Russo-Ukrainian War (2014-present), the Syrian Civil War (1911-present), the Vicious Korean and Vietnam wars with mass slaughter of civilians, the massacres in China, the Cambodjan Killing Fields, the Rwandan genocide, the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar (Burma) ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohingya_genocide ), the silent Uyghur genocide in the so called Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China (PRC), where a series of ongoing human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities take place, often characterized as genocide. And the annexation of Tibet by the People's Republic of China and oppression of the Tbetan Buddhist people by Han Chinese communist invaders.
I can also mention Jemen, Southern Sudan, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Iran, Gaza (continued Hamas and Israeli aggression there), Pakistan (contuation of a series of attacks on minority Shia Muslim mosques by Sunni Muslim extremists -often Pakistani Islamist Jihadiat Taliban forces-), India (attacks by Hindu Fundamentalist and Hindu nationalists on ethnic and religious minorities like Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Christians and others), and still in februari 2023 racist, xenophobic, antisemitic, islamophobe and homophobe attacks in the Western world on vulnerable minorities with deaths.
Unfortunately still in 2023 in some parts of the world it is still not safe if you are a woman (Femicide), black, coloured, the wrong kind of Muslim, Sikh (Sikhs were killed in racist attacks in the USA by rightwing extremists), Christian (in certain parts of the Muslim world -killed Coptic christians in Egypt and Syrian christians in Syria-), Jewish (anti-semitic attacks all over the world), homosexual or Lesbian (attacks in Uganda, Israel, the USA, Europe, Russia, Chechenia and Serbia), Hindu or homeless (attacks on homeless people).
Ar the ghosts of the Medieval religious conflicts (Catholics vs Calvinists), 18th and 19th century colonialism and imperialism, and early 20th century authoritarianism (Fascism, Phalangism, Nazism and Stalinism, Brazilian Integralism, Polish Phalangism and Endecja/National Democracy and rigid Revisionist Zionism -Ze'ev Jabotinsky-) and totalitarianism still alive and kicking?
If I look at the Russian Federation, Poland, Hungary, Turkey, China, North Korea, Venezuela, Myanmar (Burma), Serbia, Kosovo, Iran, Syria, Eritrea, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Angola, Cuba, Libya, Iqaq, Israel and Pakistan I think these ghost are still alive.
Cheers, Pieter

Babi YarBabi Yar (Russian: Ба́бий Яр) or Babyn Yar (Ukrainian: Бабин Яр) is a ravine in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and a site of massacres carried out by Nazi Germany's forces during its campaign against the Soviet Union in World War II. The first and best documented of the massacres took place on 29–30 September 1941, killing some 33,771 Jews. The decision to murder all the Jews in Kyiv was made by the military governor Generalmajor Kurt Eberhard, the Police Commander for Army Group South, SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich Jeckeln, and the Einsatzgruppe C Commander Otto Rasch. Sonderkommando 4a as the sub-unit of Einsatzgruppe C, along with the aid of the SD and Order Police battalions with the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police backed by the Wehrmacht, carried out the orders. Sonderkommando 4a and the 45th Battalion of the German Order Police conducted the shootings. Servicemen of the 303rd Battalion of the German Order Police at this time guarded the outer perimeter of the execution site.German soldier looks through clothes from murdered jews at Babi YarThe decision to murder all the Jews in Kyiv in Babi Yar was made by SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich JeckelnSS Brigadeführer and commander of Einsatzgruppe C in Kyiv/Babi Yar, Otto Rasch. In this image you see Rasch's mugshot after his indictment for the Nuremberg Military Tribunal (July 1947). Rasch made the decision to murder all the Jews in Kyiv in Babi Yar together with Generalmajor/SS Brigadeführer Kurt Eberhard and SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich Jeckeln. The massacre was the largest mass-murder by the Nazi regime during the campaign against the Soviet Union, and it has been called "the largest single massacre in the history of the Holocaust" to that particular date. It is only surpassed overall by the later October 1941 Odessa massacre of more than 50,000 Jews (committed by German and Romanian troops), and by Aktion Erntefest of November 1943 in occupied Poland with 42,000–43,000 victims.
Other victims of massacres at the site included Soviet prisoners of war, communists and Roma. It is estimated that between 100,000 and 150,000 people were murdered at Babi Yar during the German occupation.People just before their deathOne of the most well known images about the Holocaust, Nazi soldier aiming with his rifle at a Jewish mother and her child

Folks,
Today we have to be careful not to repeat the errors (mistakes) of the past. Today as humanity we can avoid the medieval horrors, 18th century tragedies (The Reign of Terror (French: la Terreur) from 5 September 1793 – 27 July 1794, during the French Revolution [5 May 1789 – 9 November 1799] when, following the creation of the First Republic, a series of massacres and numerous public executions took place in response to revolutionary fervour, anticlerical sentiment, and accusations of treason by the Committee of Public Safety), 19th century developments (American Civil War, the many European wars) and 20th century hatred, massacres and systematic destruction. Today we have tools to object, resist and address cruelty, human rights abuses, murder and mass murder. Today we have means of communication, we witness things, we have camera's, drones and satellites everywhere and few things can be hidden. As humanity we should say no to humiliation, murder, mass murder, genocides, systematic discrimination, occupation, deliberate starvation, torture and neglect of human life and dignity.
The whole Ukrainian nation fights for their right to existence, their right to be Ukrainian, Freedom & Democracy, Sovereignty, Independence, their nation, their culture, their language and their right to exist as a people, country and nation. From grandmother to soldier, from student to factory worker, from doctor to Ukrainian farmer, from Ukrainian scientist to the Ukrainian president. The Ukrainian nation is fighting for it's existence. In the same time many Russians struggle to survive in Russia or avoid subscription in an Army which fights a war which is not theirs.
Many Russians do not hate Ukrainians and many Ukrainians do not hate Russians, because they have Russian family members, friends and partners. It is hard to be not polarized and not to give in to Hatred, Ultra-Nationalism, ethnocentic (Pro-Russian or Pro-Ukrainian) thoughts, Black and White thinking and thus blood thirst. In the near future the Ukrainians and Russians will have to learn to live as neighbours again. The same counts for the Poles and Belarussians, Slovaks and Hungarians, Serbs and Croats, Irish and Brits, Turks and Kurds, Israeli Jews and Arabs, Armenians and Azerbaijanis, Indians and Pakistani's, Tutsi's and Hutu's in Rwanda and Black and White people in South Africa.
As sensible people we should choose coexistence, diplomacy, contact, communication, mediation, cultural exchange, tolerance, humanism, trade, music, culture, science and Sport above war and conflict, civil war, terrorism, armed struggle, organised crime, intolerance & hatred, aggression and violence.
Cheers, Pieter
