Titan sub implosion: What we know about catastrophic event Published
6 hours ago Titanic submersible accidentUS authorities say a debris field located in the North Atlantic leads to a conclusion that OceanGate's Titan submersible suffered a "catastrophic implosion" (a violent collapse inwards), instantly killing all five passengers on board. The US Navy says it detected sounds "consistent with an implosion" shortly after the sub lost contact on Sunday during a descent to the Titanic wreck at 3,800m (12,467ft) below sea level - but this information was only made public on Thursday.
The loss of the deep-water vessel was finally confirmed after a huge search mission in the area off Canada's Newfoundland province. What caused the implosion?Titan's hull is believed to have collapsed on Sunday as a result of enormous water pressure.
The sub was built to withstand such pressure - and experts will now be trying to determine what exactly went wrong. Analysis of the debris may help to establish this.
Titan is believed to have been 3,500m below sea level when contact was lost.
The vessel was so deep that the amount of water on it would have been equivalent to the weight of the Eiffel Tower, tens of thousands of tonnes.
If there were a rupture to the structure, the pressure outside would be much greater than the one inside the hull, compressing the vessel. What happens in an implosion? When a submarine hull collapses, it moves inward at about 1,500mph (2,414km/h) - that's 2,200ft (671m) per second, says Dave Corley, a former US nuclear submarine officer.
The time required for complete collapse is about one millisecond, or one thousandth of a second.
A human brain responds instinctually to a stimulus at about 25 milliseconds, Mr Corley says. Human rational response - from sensing to acting - is believed to be at best 150 milliseconds.
The air inside a sub has a fairly high concentration of hydrocarbon vapours.
When the hull collapses, the air auto-ignites and an explosion follows the initial rapid implosion, Mr Corley says.
Human bodies incinerate and are turned to ash and dust instantly. How an investigation is likely to proceed?Any investigation is sure to focus on the carbon fibre mid-section of the Titan sub.
The pressure vessels of deep vehicles like this are normally constructed from a robust metal such as titanium and are shaped in a sphere, to spread the immense pressure equally around the passenger compartment.
But to fit more people inside, the OceanGate sub adopted a cylindrical shape, with a carbon fibre tube inserted between to titanium end caps. Carbon fibre is very tough - they use it to build aeroplane wings and racing cars.
But did that immense pressure at depth - more than 300 times the atmosphere at the sea surface - play on the material to expose flaws in the original fabrication or to introduce and then worsen instabilities over repeated dives?
Any investigation would want to know about the practice non-destructive testing.
Aircraft are subjected to regular, very fine-scale inspections to ensure their materials are not developing cracks or that their layers are not starting to separate.
Photographing the Titan debris found on the ocean floor and bringing them back to the surface for study in a forensic lab may allow engineers to identify where on the sub structural integrity was lost, initiating the catastrophic implosion.

Hello Pieter, thanks for info about this tragedy. I think business and wealthy people should learn not to risk their lives. Still, I am surprised how much time world news took to describe the tragedy of 5 people who decided to risk their lives and how much money went to their rescue efforts compared to the tragedy last week in Greece where hundreds of immigrants lost their lives. The US news did not even mention about this tragedy in the main news. here is more about these poor people with no country: www.cnn.com/2023/06/23/europe/greece-migrant-boat-disaster-investigation-intl-cmd/index.html

Pieter
This was indeed a terrible tragedy with the death of those five people. It is not surprising but of course unwanted, to be at such deep depths as this submersible was at to have such a failure as occurred. With any thought of recovering the bodies is not a reality, for in such instances as this, most every thing is blown to pieces in as well as the soft tissues of the human body.
Perhaps now this area of the sunken ship and now this situation, should be considered as a grave site to be left alone as it should have been in the past. People do not take paid excursions through a cemetery and this location is little different.

The US news did not even mention about this tragedy in the main news. here is more about these poor people with no country: www.cnn.com/2023/06/23/europe/greece-migrant-boat-disaster-investigation-intl-cmd/index.html Dear Jaga,
Of course this migrant boat disaster on the Mediterranean Sea was horrendous, it was on Dutch and other European news Chanals. Unfortunately many of these boat disasters already happened and they will continue to happen, due to wars, civil wars, terror, human rights abuses, a gap of wealth between the wealthy Europe on one side and poor Africa, Middle Eastern countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan on the other side. A problem from one side is indifference from European populations and Populists politicians, and from the other side efforts to make Europe a fortress with Frontex (European Border and Coast Guard Agency), National Coast Guards, police forces, Customs agencies and armies that try to push these refugees back or put them in terrible camps. Many of these refugees see Paradise in Europe and hear stories about money, Jobs, prosperity, housing and social security while the reality is very different. Many of these refugees become illegal stateless migrants, and often live in deplorable situations. Many are exploited by Human Traffickers, Human trafficking rings, slave Labor and prostitution rings (girls and women mostly) in Europe. It is sad but European navies should patrol the North African coasts, and the Greek and Turkish waters. To avoid these dramatic tragedies and stop it where it starts and not in front of European shores. If people know that they have no chance to reach Europe and that there is no Future in Europe they won't try to cross the Mediterranean Sea and will not come to Europe.
We have an enormous amount of immigrants and refugees already. The world should create safe zones and no fly area’s with refugee camps and plans for sending back and resettle these people from where they came from. Europe does not want these people Jaga. England has huge problems with Pakistani’s, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany with North Africans, Sweden with Somalians and Eritreans. It sounds tough, but Europe wants to stay European, Europe for the European peoples. Over and over I hear civilians from various European countries, especially from places with large concentrations of Refugees and new migrants; “There are only young men amongst these refugees and they are mostly Muslim.” The aversion to the fact that most refugees are young men, and fear of families, mothers and fathers for their children, daughters and women being sexually harassed by young refugee men is large.
Yes these Europeans are often Xenophobe, Islamophobe, allergic for Muslim young men (and they immediately recognize young Afghan, Pakistani and North African men), and therefor not empathic for refugees that drown. I hear the harsh reply; “They shouldn’t have come in the first place. If they wouldn’t have come they wouldn’t have drowned. Go back where you came from.”
Other Europeans, many Europeans do have empathy, feel pity and many of them even try to help, from Christian, Leftist or Humanist convictions. And not only Christians, but also European Jews, Muslims and people with other faiths. And fact is that you have Pro-Refugee and Anti-Refugee sentiments in all communities. Integrated Muslim migrants whom have become ‘New Europeans’ fear that masses of non-European Muslim refugees create anti-Muslim sentiments, Xenophobia, Islamophobia, discrimination and racism for them. These European Muslims have become Europeanized and don’t like the newcomers. Some non-Arab European Muslims have anti-Arab sentiments. TurkeyTurkey has a history of strong anti-Arabism. During the Ottoman Empire, the Arabs were treated as just second-class subjects and suffered from immense discrimination by the Ottoman Turkish rulers, in addition, most of government's main positions were either held by Turks or non-Arab people, except for the Emirate of Hejaz under Ottoman rule. Future policy of anti-Arab sentiment, including the process of Turkification, led to the Arab Revolt (10 June 1916 – 25 October 1918) against the Ottomans.
Because of the Syrian refugee crisis, anti-Arabism has intensified. Haaretz reported that anti-Arabian racism in Turkey mainly affects two groups; (1) tourists from the Gulf who are characterized as "rich and condescending" and (2) the Syrian refugees in Turkey. Haaretz also reported that anti-Syrian sentiment in Turkey is metastasizing into a general hostility toward all Arabs including the Palestinians. Deputy Chairman of the nationalist and Kemalist political the Good Party warned that Turkey risked becoming "a Middle Eastern country" because of the influx of refugees. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Party )
Outside historical enmity, anti-Arabism is also widespread in Turkish media, as Turkish media and education curriculum associating Arabs with backwardness. This has continued influencing modern Turkish historiography and the crusade of Turkish soft power, with Arabs being frequently stereotyped as evil, uncivilized, terrorists, incompetent, stupid, etc. This depiction is frequently used in contrast to the alleged depiction of Turkic people as "noble, generous, fearsome, loyal, brave and spirited warriors".
Anti-Arab sentiment is also further fueled by ultranationalist groups, including the Grey Wolves and pan-Turkist nationalist parties, who called for invasions on the Arab World's Syria and Iraq, to prevent the ongoing Arab persecution of its Turkic populations in many Arab countries of the Middle East. Subsequently, Turkey has begun a series of persecuting its Arab population, as well as desire to recreate the new Turkish border.A Grey Wolves demonstratioin in Turkey, the Ultra Nationalist Grey Wolves are Anti-Arab. New York Times correspondent and associate editor Raymond Walter Apple Jr. (November 20, 1934 – October 4, 2006) described the Turkish Ultranationalist MHP party and its satellite groups (amongst whom the Grey Wolves (Bozkurtlar), a "xenophobic, fanatically nationalist, neofascist network steeped in violence."Europe’s past and the refugee crisisIf you understand that Fascism and Christian Ultra nationalism exists in the various Southern European countries, and that even the ‘European’ Muslim countries Turkey, Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina aren’t rather Refugee/migrant friendly, you understand how difficult the situation is for incoming refugees in Southern Europe and South-Eastern Europe. Turkey (with it’s anti-Arabism), Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Italy, Malta, France, Portugal and Spain are not easy countries to enter for refugees. Turkish guards and soldiers push Refugees onto Greek soil or waters and Greek Guards/Soldiers push them back. Poland, the Baltic States and Finland don’t want refugees that come via Belarus and the Russian Federation. Refugees will continue to drown in the Mediterranean sea, in the tough mountainous borderlands between Iran, Iraq and Syria from one side and Turkey 🇹🇷 on the other. People also starved to death 💀 ☠️ while freezing in the mountains, falling accidents, being hit by falling rocks or stones, snake bites, and maybe even bear attacks or the danger of other wild animals and sometimes hostile locals, and crooks whom steal their money and than these refugees are stuck where they are, because they can't pay human traffickers anymore. Other refugees suffocated in the back of Trucks due to a lack of Oxygen, being locked up in a container. This human tragedy goes on Year after year. I repeat reality. Europe does not want these Refugees that drowned, and many Europeans didn’t care about these dead refugees, because they are Xenophobes, Islamophobes and racists. Like in the past Europeans were indifferent for Jews that suffered from Pogroms, discrimination, exclusion and the Holocaust. They didn’t care about the persecutions of Protestants by Catholic majorities, the burning of women whom were accused of being Witches. People are people and people have an egocentric, ethnocentric and selfish nature. Marek Edelman described it rightly.

Jaga,
There is a difference between a large group of Safe landers/Free landers, people whom are amongst the refugees and whom come from countries with no war, no civil war, not really dictatorships or maybe authoritarian nations, but not nations where they would starve from hunger or thirst. Okay, they have poverty there and maybe are unemployed. But that is the responsibility of these nations, countries and people themselves to solve these issues. They can't just go to Europe, without speaking the European languages, without respect for European customs, traditions, history, Christianity and Judaism, the native European peoples and etc. In the Netherlands we speak about 'Real refugees' from war and Civil War zones and 'Economical refugees' from Safe countries, and these 'Economical refugees' are seen as profiteers and not suitable for settlement in the Netherlands.
Recently, there has been a lot of attention for asylum seekers from so-called 'safe countries' in the Netherlands. It is known that a large part of the nuisance in and around a number of asylum seekers centers is caused by asylum seekers from these countries. Despite extra enforcement, it has not yet been possible to structurally solve this nuisance.
These Safe landers/Free landers spoil it for the real refugees from war torn nations. So these Safe landers/Free landers from Morocco, Algeria, Tunesia, Albania, Mongolia, Georgia, Armenia, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon and other African countries without war or civil war should not be in Europe. They are unwelcome guests. They have no money, do not bring in wealth, but cost Europeans money. If these people would be sent back, there would be less problems with refugees and ethnic tensions between refugees. Because you have ethnic tensions between refugees and the Safe landers from North-Africa cause problems, because they know they have no right to be here and the possibility of being sent back makes them irritated, frustrated, angry, furious, a nuisance, annoying, aggressive, sometimes violent, criminal, reckless, risky, vandalistic and intimidating towards natives and other 'real refugees' from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.
Pieter P.S.- You might say the USA took in the ppor from Europe, Economical refugees. The USA did that, but the present world is different, there are more people and Europe is not the USA.
Europe is not;Give me your tired, your poor Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free The wretched refuse of your teeming shore Send these the homeless tempest-tost to me I lift my lamp beside the golden door! Give me your tired, your poor Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free The wretched refuse of your teeming shore Send these the homeless tempest-tost to me I lift my lamp beside the golden door!We have enough poor Europeans from a large European underclass and the poor part of the immigrants. We can not ad to that masses of newcomers. That would disturb the balance and equality in our Social Capitalist, European Market economies and Parliamentarian democracies.

Pieter and jaga
The following is truth and not just words of what Pieter has brought forth. These people are being fed exaggerations and lies by groups who are taking their money for transport to our shores. It is a business for the few to take from the many.
For if these people wish to enter our respective lands, then do it the legal way.
