Pieter..I once worked with a lady who came from the Netherlands. Ineke. She and her husband Hans had a sauna in their house and the whole family would sit in it bare naked. We Americans aren't as inhibited as you Europeans. She introduced me to "olle bollen" much like our "punchki" if you are familiar. I used to love to hear her stories and how she once ran into her neighbor and said "Oh, I did not recognize you with your clothes on". ROFL.

Well, Going to a communal bath is on top of that list. While in the far east, that was how you did it. There you would find your neighbors and your family.
Nudity is perceived differently there than in our culture. It was very discreet and very refreshing once you cleared your mind of the western way of thinking.

The difference between Europeans and Americans is that Europeans do not mind to show some nudity on the screen while Americans do not mind showing skulls blowned away. What do you think is better? ;D

I'm not sure all Americans like to see such violence. Hollywood (mostly the left) makes movies for profit. Most of the nation has a different set of values.

Jaga, I agree with Jim: a lot of what is shown on TV and movie screens doesn't reflect the values of many, if not most, Americans. I think people watch violent stuff because it's attention-getting and shocking, which is different from actually enjoying it. And attention-getting, shocking things make money, unfortunately. I personally can't watch anything violent at all. Sometimes the evening news is too much for me.
But I wonder if, in general, American TV has more violent content than European TV?

Suzanne,
And as you know here in America we have hundreds of channels to choose from, history, art, science, oldies etc. So if you don't like the violence you just change the channel. I noticed on the farm in Poland they watch the news at 20:00 and that is about it. I don't know what kind of other programs are available in Poland. When I'm there I don't watch any T.V. I enjoy the contry.

Yes, of course, there's plenty of channels; I certainly didn't want to imply that violent stuff is all that's available. I'm not a huge TV watcher anyway. The Internet is my "screen of choice."

Suzanne, I was not implying you did, just letting others know we have a raft of channels to watch for those so inclined.

No problem, Jim, I thought perhaps I had been unclear. Yes, we certainly do have a ton of channels. 200 channels and "nothing's on!"

I guess I tend to watch the news and SciFi. However, I do love the martial arts movies including those that fly through air. Steven Segal is the most true to the art, well his earlier films. I have been involved in Karate and Aikido for years.

Dear Jaga, Nancy and Rdywenur,
Thanks for your words. Chris (Rdywenur), I was laughing very hard when I read your post. The same sort of story I heard from a lady from the city Washington when I was in L.A. in Hollywood in 1999. She knew an old Duch female dancer, who liked running around in nudity. For someone who is prudish like me it is a very funny story, because I know from my family and most of my friends and colleages that they are the opposite of "Nudists". Like everywhere in the Western world you have Nudist in the Netherlands, like you have Nudist associations in Germany, Great Brittain, Poland and the USA. They have their private beaches, clubs and Sauna's, but when you for instance go naked in Public in a lake area, beach or forest which is opend for public you might be arrested by the police for inproper behaviour or public nudity. I think that Nudity culture is more a thing of Scandinavians and some Germans. We have exhebitionists, and decadent and hedonist people here, but I think that today most people are a little bit conservative or behaving according to an new public moral, which has a lot to do with social control, and a revival of religious convictions in society. Like in the USA there is a differance between what we see on television, the Cinema and in the media and waht travellers or immigrants show from their culture of origin. In Europe there live a lot of left libertarian cultural Americans, who have some frustration about the country they come from. And when we listen only to them we get the image of the USA as a reactionary biblebelt, arms fanatics, far right lunatics and Autarkic isolationalists. But because of the Internet, family in Milwaukee and Chicago, my interest in Indiefilms and my interest in American quality media and temporary culture, art and documentry I know that that image isn't accurate. I am sure Ineke is the person you describe her to be, but she and her family isn't representable for the population of the Netherlands, even if she want that to be. I think the average Duch family and individual looks more like an American and American family as you think. Unlike other European countries we do not use voice overs, and so grew up with English speaking American sitcoms, movies, videoclips, documentries, music and literature. While the generation of my father and my grandparents were influenced by French, British, Italian and German culture, my generation is Americanised. A lot of American words entered the Duch language, due to Multi-media, Audio-visual means, computers, software and the internet. I am glad that my family didn't had a sauna in their house so that I did not have to sit with my family in it bare naked. I might be old fashionate, but that is the way I am. "olle bollen" is a Folkist thick guy who stands in our amusementpark "De Efteling" in the Catholic southern province of Brabant. We called him "Holle Bolle Gijs", (Hollow Fat Gijs).
Jaga,
I do not think that there is so much differance between Europeans and Americans, because we see the American stufwhich shows us the skulls that are blowned away. And European movies and series are also about crime, war, and science fiction. In my opinion the differances between America and Europe are becomming smaller. From my part I like modern American cinema and European cinema, and the merging of elements of the two, due to the cooperations between Europeans and Americans. A transatlantic culture is emerging (British-American alliance).
