The devellopment of Chillian economy was based on the blood, swet and tears of the Chilian population, and much of the profits went to the ruling class and abroad to foreign companies. Pieter Yes, of course. But isn`t it natural? Every country`s progress, starting from ancient Egypt, is based on blood, sweat and tears of its workers. You can`t change it. But there won` t be progress unless people work hard.

Pawian,
I cannot agree that economy is so great in capitalistic society. What if economy is ruled by big corporations, what if the government is only ruled by interests of the rich or corporations which has nothing really to do with this country except PROFIT like it happened in Guatemala.
But maybe there is something in it. On the other hand people can argue that at least it socialism/communistic countries EDUCATION is something the government cares for. The economy in Russia and EE was bad but education was good and equal for everybody. What about Guatemala - there were less than 5% of people who could read and write 30 years ago.

Pawian, No, it is a BIG MYTH invented by Polish communists. The truth is that before 1989 only 7% (SEVEN!) of Poles had a university diplomas. University education wasn`t really welcome by the regime because it produced free-minded students who too often revolted against the system (1968). Today we are making it up, but I don` t know the exact numbers. The secondary level education wasn`t better either in communism. And generally the education wasn`t more equal than it is today. I remember I had to pass entrance exams to get to an elite state high school in Krakow. Today kids have the same problems. globalis.gvu.unu.edu/indicator_detail.cfm?Country=GT&IndicatorID=27#row

Pawian,
the primary and secondary education in POland is on the higher level at least in sciences than in the USA. As for the high edication, you are right, it seems from the perspective of Krakow that everybody has a master degree.
When I was in Poland I also thought that there is nothing worse than communism but now I think that rampant capitalism was even worse and it goes through different stages.
Now, American Congress decided to cut some funds so they are going to cut food stamps for poor, but they are not going to cut any funds for petrolem corporations which had a huge profit recently, they are not going to cut the highway bill or Iraq.
SO WE NEED ANOTHER TEDDY ROOSEVELT? ... to get rid of big belly greedy capitalists - which I remember from SOviet time encyclopedia inPoland?
