hint1: it is in Poland hint2: it is very old It is a reconstructed ancient wooden settlement, located in the village of Biskupin in northern Poland. Once it was considered to have been built by Slavs. Today scientists believe the settlement goes back to pre-Slavic times.

Thank you, Pawian This location, or a very similar one, or a stage set, was used in one of the films produced from the Henryk Sienkiewicz novels. As I really like these sorts of historical details, I am glad to know that such a place really exists. GM

Thanks guys, Have any of you saw it? I was there once but a long time ago. This is not really Polish or German (Germans also tried to prove during the war that this was germanic) but Lausitz culture there. Here is probably the most expetnsive site in English with history, pictures etc: www.muzarp.poznan.pl/muzeum/muz_pol/Arena/Biskupin/index_eng.html

GM The set you are writing about was made for the film "Stara baśń,"(Old Tale) based on a novel by J. Kraszewski, the most prolific writer in the history of literature - he wrote about 600 thick books (their quality is a different subject). I saw the film, it had been advertised as a Polish-made "Gladiator"-like movie, but it turned out to be a failure.

Hi, I've never seen the Kraszewski film, so the one I remember must have been one of the one from the Henryk Sienkiewicz novels. I'll jave to get them and watch them again So...also...I will need to look into whether or not the Kraszewski film is available here in the U.S. - even if there are no English subtitle, I can still look at the sets and costuming Thank you for the reply about the setting I would like to see Biskupa one of these days. I did check out the web sites... GM

I did check out the web sites... Check this one. It presents some photos from the Festival of Old Culture which is held in Biskupin every autumn. There are many events during the festival and one can see how people used to live at the time. www.biskupin.pl/galeria.phpwww.biskupin.pl/festyn.php
