Yanc, Good pictures, and I found many more interesting ones on that site. ;D I now refuse to drive when it is snowing, after driving a couple of times in near-blizzard conditions (years ago) I decided to get smarter and stay home (if I can).

Kai What is going on with this climate? I thought you would be using your skies to leave your front door with by now.... Charles You are right, Charles. In a normal winter the snow should have been here and stayed for the last month in Anchorage, and for the last two months in Fairbanks. Alaska has warmed up in the last 30+ years, average of about 3F in the winters and the summers have stayed the same. Last spring we had aspecial engineering seminar on the warming permafrost and how as engineers we have to plan for it. I have searched for an on-line photo or sketch showing the thaw bulb freezing bulb under the pipeline that John refered to, but have found none as yet. Well, the Gee Whiz has a lot of good stuff, nad here is an article on thawing permafrost with a photo of what can happen.. www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF6/671.htmlDo you have any suntan lotion for sale? I want to buy the fanchise for Alaska... Kai

Yeah, Poles had the first snow during these days. Driving conditions are difficult. Here in Idaho we do not have any snow in the plains now but it is cold, so cold that I can use garage as my refrigerator.

Finally! SOme decent snow. The city folks have had fun with crash and bump sport. They scare me a bit. Now to shovel a bit and bring out the snow blower for the winter. I usually only use it 3 or 4 times per year, but when then, it does get used!

Kai
I am still laughing over your Sun Tan lotion idea, well, who knows....
I did run up the url you gave on Permafrost. That was interesting, I have very little concept of actual permafrost, other then frozen soil under a matt of insulating moss or similar.
The steel rod and/or dug pit method of locating permafrost makes good sense.
thanks
Charles
