I am rediscovering my Polish roots & the customs we followed when I was a child. I've been searching on the internet but so far have not had too much luck in my search for pronunciations. Is there a dictionary or something online that will help me with Polish pronunciations? The one I'm really in search of right now is how to pronounce Wigilia. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. TC

Pronunciation - I expect you will get a lot of advice, so here's my contribution. !. All polish phrase books have a secion on it at the start. 2. I've used a site on the Internet and can recommend it - it's still there as I've just checked it. www.polishculture.org.uk/polish_language/pl_pronuc.html. Pozdrawiam serdecznie w Anglia Leslie

Hello tastycat,
Let me echo Leslie's Welcome! I am glad that you have joined us.
We actually have an ongoing thread about Wilia/Wigilia and the pronounciation - it is in the Books, Movies, Music folder - it is the very first (stickied) topic in the list. Please take a look and see if this helps you (hopefully it will not confuse you even more!)

golem.umcs.lublin.pl/users/ppikuta/lessons/less0.htmThis is a site that is an on line course, and if you go to the :"Basic information about the language" section, it has a detailed explanation, as well as "click to hear" for all the vowels, consonants and clusters. I like this one a lot. PS: Tastycat, please don't eat Nancy's cat. ;D

Welcome on board tastycat, Good luck with rediscovering! About pronunciation: I've done it before for someone here, that is I have recorded my very own, native pronunciation of some words - with a link so you click and it plays! Well, here's a deal if you stay with us for some time I'd surely record some words for you to play.

Hopefully, tastycat, you will stick around and reap the benefits of this forum. (I guess it is OK to be "someone" rather than "nobody" )

;D I remember all the naughty and nasty phrases that my grandparents used. Why is it easy to remember those and have trouble with others? ;D
