Someone in one of our topics (I forget who or where & can't find the thread) asked about U.S. telephone cards and their use (charge) for long-distance, as to Poland. Friday, I bought a new telephone card as a gift for one of my siblings. For the first time there was information about using the card to call from a country other than the U.S. or Canada. So, here is the scoop: For $19.99 I bought 700 minute card at BJ's Warehouse / Buying Club. It works out to $.285 / minute here in the U.S. 24/7. It is rechargeable at this rate. I called the customer service number on the card and learned that a call to Poland is $00.16 / minute. A caller needs a special access number to call from overseas to the U.S. All this takes is calling the customer service telephone number. I didn't ask what it would be from Poland to the U.S. The card is from MCI. The representative said that the card from BJ's is about the best. If there is not a BJ's in your area and you want to know where you can get an MCI card and for what rates, the toll-free number is 1-800-830-94444. Hope this helps someone...most of it was new to me GM

GM, Good to know. Thanks for the tip. I assume this card works for calling the US from pretty much anywhere in Europe, but does it happen to say on it if it works from Asia?

Susanne,
You'd have to call the "800 number" to find out. If the one above doesn't work out, I can call (free) from my card. I needed to give my identification #, etc. when I wanted to inquire about Poland.

Thanks, Gardenmoma - I had read your original message too quickly and did not see the 1-800 number. I'll call them and get the info. The card sounds like a good deal.

I do not have even a long distance provider anymore, I just use the calling cards everywhere, mainly on calling Poland

In New Britain, any Polish store you go to will carry general phone cards and then ones that seem to be especially for Poland. Usually they're really good when they first come out, but then become worse. So it's best to ask the pretty ladies working behind the counter . They know which ones are the best.

I once bought a card from WalMart, but the rate for calling Russia was extraordinarily high. A similar card from Kmart gave a little more time. The best rate I found from cards sold over the counter was at the Post Office - their cards give great rates for calling overseas, especially to places not usually called by Americans (i.e. Canada or Western Europe).
"Cards" bought online usually give even better rates.
