Document grants more rights to Poles abroad 07.09.2007 The Polish parliament has adopted a resolution on the Charter of Polish Communities Abroad. 428 parliamentarians voted in favor while only 3 were against it. As a result, Poles will be given a document granting them privileges and rights defined in the charter which will be valid for 10 years. The charter envisages the possibility of receiving Polish visas free-of-charge as well as discounted railway tickets and easier access to Polish universities. According to Piotr Krzywicki of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS), the new law is aimed to help mainly Poles living in the former Soviet republics who cannot be holders of a double citizenship and those whose parent or grandparent is a Polish citizen. They also have to speak some Polish and submit a written declaration of belonging to the Polish nation.
What constitutes a declaration of belonging to the Polish nation?
