Today when the convoy drove through the mine. 3 other soldiers are injured. Since there will be a new government in Poland there are more and more support to the idea that Poland should leave Iraq completely. here is more (in Polish): wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/Wiadomosci/1,80269,4635047.html and from BBC: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7075397.stmThe soldier's death brings to 22 the number of Polish troops killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003. Poland's Prime Minister-designate Donald Tusk announced this week that he will seek to remove all Polish troops from Iraq next year. I had just posted this under the news section ....
"I think the latest news out of Iraq pretty much seals the "troops out" discussion. People need to remember that the commitment from Warsaw was for ONE year and the Poles have stayed way beyond that.
From Polskie Radio: Soldier killed in Iraq 02.11.2007 A Polish soldier has been killed in Iraq. Thirty one year old Andrzej Filipek died in an explosion of a land mine, defense minister Aleksander Szczyglo said at a press briefing. Three Polish soldiers were wounded in the same incident. One suffered serious injuries. The soldiers were a in a Humvee, which ran on a mine planted at a roadside. The incident took place in the morning. A rapid reaction force and medics were sent immediately to the site. In a separate statement, Minister Szczyglo condemned a journalist of the widely read Gazeta Wyborcza daily and its web page editors for publishing the information about the incident before the military informed the families of the victims. Minister Szczyglo said the journalist broke a decency rule and said legal steps will be taken against him. Andrzej Filipek is the 28th Pole killed in Iraq since September 2003, when a multinational division under Polish command assumed responsibility for the south-central stabilization zone. Presently, the 9th rotation of the Polish military contingent is serving in Iraq. Like the previous ones, it numbers around 900 soldiers. According to a survey conducted by CBOS opinion research centre in October, 81 percent of Poles are against Polish military presence in Iraq."

With all due respect to the Polish military killed in Iraq and their loved ones, please remember the thousands of American military who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan in the pursuit of "what"? Bin Laden, Al Qaeda, Taliban, WMD'S and Saddam Hussein. Score "freedom" 1(Hussein "questionable connections to the Islamic radicals, but definite bad guy, good riddance)--"terror" unknown, but seemingly ahead in killing innocent and unsuspecting civilians out side the "war zone" "

We are talking about war..... A few dutch soldiers where killed in Afganistan last year. A polish soldier is killed in Iraq. Thousands of USA soldiers are killed. One of all this boys could have been your friend, your husband or partner? But as long as you don't know them, they are numbers. Just as the many locals dying there daily.

War is hell, so said some one about WW II or whatever. I am not a cynic about the horrendous loss of life in the Middle East. I want only to put in perspective that the death of American soldiers in this insane conflict far exceeds that of Poland. As a Polish American, I appreciate the support of the Polish military and nation. I only wish that our efforts in the "war" would make the world finally at peace. Not likely
