Sometime ago, Nancy convinced me to tell the story of my search for my grandmother’s family, Harasim. I was born in her home, and we were very close. Unfortunately, though she lived to age 92, nobody, including her children, knew where she was born. I started searching, and with Nancy’s great help, we came up with this: nancy.polishsite.us/gen_JJ1.htmlNot much has changed since she published it, but I have been in contact with numerous people on the INTERNET, some which read the story and asked about the research. Several are definitely related, some we're just not sure, yet. One of the people I'm in regular contact with is Barry Kaminski. Since my family tree and the Kaminski's are tightly inter twined, he has spent quite a bit of time researching my Harasim surname. Barry found what I had been looking for unsuccessfully: the parents of my Great, Great Grandfather, Stanislaw Harasim. Stanislaw was born in 1819, to Gzegorz Harasim and Rozalia Paulakov in Wronowo. Gzegorz was 50 at the time, so I now can trace the family back to 1769. We have the name of some of Stanislaw’s siblings, so there are other branches of this tree to be explored, SOMETIME….. I can now trace my Grandmother's side of the family to a time before the US Revolutionary war. This is amazing to me. My mother and her surviving brother (he has since passed) didn't even know the first names of her grandparents, so to get this far in just a few years is mind boggling. Just thought I'd share.......

The last name "Harasim", does not really sound purely Polish. It sound more Russin-Ukrainian-Jewish. Therefore your ancestor might come from Eastern Poland which was the mixture of different nationalities. We had a great poet - Jerzy Harasymowicz, you can read about him here: pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerzy_Harasymowiczunfortunately this is only in Polish, but it has his picture I wish I knew what the word "Harasim" or "harasym" come from. It is not that common, maybe you and piwo are the same family? I will e-mail him

Alyssa,
The last part of Harasim could have been dropped. It could have been Haraasymowicz or some other version. I will check my references in a few days.

alyssa,
It may me of interest tp you, that Harasimowicks were known to my family. There is a listing in the Suffolk county telephone directory for a Jan Harasimowicz on Claus Ave in Riverhead,N.Y. If I remember correctly(it's been a long, long time) the Harasimowicks were farmers in Yaphank or Calverton, L.I.

alyssa, just spoke to my oldest relative and she remembers visiting the Harasimowicks. They were farmers and lived in Calverton, L.I ,N.Y Over the years some of the family changed their name to Harris. My family name is Zaniewski and I believe my father, John(Jan) knew the Harasimowicz family

Michigan is full of Arasim, which is Harasim only with the H removed... which is what the governments "soundex" recognizes it as. I don't think it is as prevalent as other Polish "surnames", but there are plenty out there. I've never talked to any Harasim (who didn't change from Harasimowicz or some derivative) who were not Roman Catholic. There are Harasim back to the early 1700's in the vicinity my family is from, which is in fact northeastern Poland, so it's not a modern derivation.
Alyssa has not logged in since sending her first post. Not sure how to get in touch with her....
