It is a very sad time in Western Iowa, Blencoe Little Sioux Boy Scout Ranch. I feel sorry for the families and offer my condolences. Four boy scouts are dead and some 40 are wounded. Tornadors are natural disasters, not man-made, this is true. But there isn't a single natural disaster from which we can't learn something, and I see two lessons in this disaster. First and foremost, as the media reported, while there was "little time for warning, [...] the weather service did issue two warnings minutes before the tornado hit." Imagine the Camp Instructor had minutes to order life-saving measures ... except for one thing: "[but] it wasn't clear whether the camp had sirens." This is the first lesson: sirens in tornado country are a must in children's camps because sirens reinforce the sense of urgency in every mind! And the second lesson is also important. No camp for children should be without a safety bunker! These four lives have been unnecessarily lost! A cement bunker cannot be destroyed by a tornado! I hope that the people responsible for the children heed this advice. Bunkers aren't costly, but they do save lives!
