There are two items of news that I think deserve attention. First is the news that there is tawing in China-Taiwan relations due to the irresistible enticement of tying the Taiwan economy to the Chinese economic juggernaut, which has already absorbed 100 billion dollars in Taiwanese investments. While this situation reflects negatively on the power of the American economic supremacy in Asia, it does offer a tangible prospect of a peaceful China-Taiwan reunification, something that will ultimately be the best for the world. The second not less important news is the announcement that: "officials from Japan and North Korea were meeting last Thursday in Beijing for talks on the communist country's nuclear programs and to resolve a dispute over North Korea's kidnappings of Japanese citizens in the 1970s and 80s." I find this news particularly promissing for the Western world. Once these long-standing impediments are worked out, North Korea will cease to be an object of international suspicion and contention, and the relations between it and the West will take a much positive turn, even in spite of the hegemonic overtures from China.

Nathanael, thanks for the update. I hope that Chinese government tries to use the common sense. They had a terrible eartquake recently and a real mass effort was made to save lives of many thousands people! On the other hand, please, check these slides. They show a very poor side of China: www.slideshare.net/kimi/china-interesting-sights/
